My 1917

Hi There,

Tell us more about how it came to reside with you!

There isn't much to tell. I saw it in a little 'hole in the wall' gunshop
over 40 years ago and I fell in love with it and bought it. I don't
know its back story so I cannot give you any particulars on it.

I believe it was arsenal refinished at some point. It is just too
clean to be original finish.

Here are a few more pics for you to look at.

Cheers,
Webb

Yes, the extra serial number stamped on the barrel flat indicates an arsenal refurbishment & refinish.

40 years

40 years ago is a long time, I remember the first M-1917 I was offered I was stationed at Everux-Fauville, France, 1966. A sergeant was rotating and offered me a 1917 with a ammo can full of .45 apc ammo for $10, I turned him down, I the thought gun was too big and bulky. I had a M-19 I was shooting. I was not collecting Smiths at the time , I was a married E-4 and my take home pay was $318 a month. I was living in base trailers, $35 a month and $12 a month for utility's. Darn! That was 55 years ago. Time flys when your having fun.

I've got a few Colt M1917 refurbs that have the refurb number stamped all over the darn things, even on some of the parts under the sideplate. Have you looked to see if your S&W example has them on the hammer, trigger, etc too?

I chocked it up to seeing so many added numbers on the Colts due to Colt not serializing or assembly numbering as many parts as S&W did. I might "need" a refurb'd S&W in my M1917 collection. 😄

I joined this club much more recently. I picked the S&W over a three digit serial Colt 1917 (similar condition) for about the same $. 2022 was the year of the fixed sight N frame for me.

I opened up my 1917 and the only other 'refurbish' serial number
was on the back of the cylinder under the extractor. Here are some
more pics.

The original S&W fitting No. 3599 is in the usual places.

Webb

Do you guys shoot these revolvers?

They look nice but if I had one I would be taking it to the range a lot. I have never fired one and always wondered how they compared to firing a .45 ACP 1911.
