Sept. 19,1981 my dad traded off his 4" S&W 66-1 for a new 4" 686 (no dash)-he liked to use .357 ammo on a steady diet & the K frames just couldn't handle it on a regular basis. When he passed in early '92 I inherited it. When my older son came home from his first deployment in '07 I passed it on to him.

It has the original grips (though dad carried it w/Pachmayr rubber grips), box, all papers/pamphlets, tools and even the receipt. My dad had it worked over by Frank Glenn in Phoenix, has an amazing double action (smooth & polished trigger face also), nice bead blast finish. One day it'll go to a grandchild of mine and on & on. Over at my son's snapped some pics (batteries dying in camera-sorry they're soft focus), enjoy.

Thanks for sharing the picture, the history, the present & the future of a great Family firearm ;)

Take care & all the best.

Great tradition. That is something a new gun and money can't buy. Every time you pick it up it will help you think of your father and grandfather.

Thanks all. My son was speechless when I told him it was time for him to have it. He has a Les Baer Thunder Ranch Commanche with Bear Coat I bought him when he was home on leave in '06 (it was a surprise gift for him), plus a ParaOrdnance P14 specially marked with his first unit's insignia & "OIF" (offered direct from Para, not sure if they still do), in desert tan w/black night sights, grips & accents.

He loves shooting his Baer but the 686 holds a special place for him. Have a great weekend everyone.

Great looking gun for the years it's been in your family. A wonderful traditon to keep it in the family as well.

I have .357's in J,K & N frames. Odd that I haven't replaced my L frame from 1983 when I did a year as a local LEO. I put 9,000 rounds of .38's thru that gun and loved it. Your father was a wise man.

The gun is beautiful, I hope to leave my future children something in hopes they show it half the care you have obviously placed in your father's gun.
Thanks for sharing.
