Simple yet effective. I honestly can't stand some of the newer "tactical" knives folks are carrying these days, especially the "multipurpose" ones (which might as well be a euphemism for, "jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none") with these dinky little 2.5-3" blades with serrations on the back which are supposed to cut rope but would probably be terrible for that purpose unless the so-called "rope" you're working with is more like thick twine, a little spring-loaded apparatus for breaking glass, and a flahlight that might as well be a laser pointer.

Personally, if I wanted an all-purpose knife, then I'd reach for a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, and for self-defense I'll carry a knife tailored specifically for said task.
I'm more afraid of thugs than I am Lionel Hutz, so I'm not going to try to tip-toe around the fact that I chose a knife specifically for my legal right to defend myself. Besides, most old-school defensive knives look less threatening than these newer all-purpose knives with jagged teeth on the blade.

I agree, besides a gun I always carry a fighting knife and a SAK. My daily SAK is presently trying to be cleaned after suffering water and soot damage and I miss it; I need to dig out another one one of these days. My fighters vary, from a small switchblade named after the AK-47 (sorry, DHC, it has serrations :D) to a knife that looks VERY MUCH like the one in the OP and which would be with me right now EXCEPT, somehow, I left it home today. I'll post a picture tomorrow.

I sometimes carry this one:

It's a tad heavy but it's a gorgeous, well balanced machine.

I admit I am not without a knife on any given day because this one is on my key chain - I'd hate to have to fight with it, though, it's likely to bend:

EDC is either a Spyderco Endura or a Kershaw OSO Sweet. I don't consider either a fighting knife, though either would serve.

If I were going to carry a fighting knife it would be a kukri (my choice of four or five ways to spell that). I suspect the prospect of having an arm lopped off would be a deterrent to rash behavior.

Bonjour, Frenchie. You're the second member we have here from France, to my knowledge. The other is a herpetologist who also lives near Paris.

How bad are the knife laws there? Can one carry a normal Swiss Army knife, 91mm closed? A lockblade German hunting knife like a Puma Model 943?

I have an older M-943, and bigwheelzip may want to know that its corkscrew works better than the smaller one on a Swiss Army knife. Both will suffice, but the larger ones on Puma and Henckels folding hunting knives are better. Yes, some corks I've pulled were from French wines. That includes many from the 1855 list of the best Bordeaux estates and some from fine white burgundies, including Grande and Premiere grade Chablis.

My EDC knives always include a Swiss Army in my trousers pocket and a larger, locking, knife in a belt pouch. These days, it's usually a Benchmade Model 710 with partially serrated blade.

What's the blade length on your Sebenza? Chris Reeve was already a celebrated knifemaker when he moved here from South Africa decades ago. He has a reputation for top quality work. I understand your pride in that knife.

In France, laws about knives are new and simple : in public places, you can't carry any kind of knife without valid reason ! (anti-terrorist law)
But what is a valid reason ?

I also like and I have one SAK Victorinox Spartan knife in my car.
Simple but efficient !
I carry my CRK Sebenza only when I walk in the countryside (unfortunately, not often enough for my liking !)

The blade length of my Sebenza is 3" (small model).

The Sebenza is justifiably considered a classic, nicely fitted, using the best materials, comfortable in hand, and unfortunately way above my pay grade.

I don’t think much of a knife for self-defense, but if my thoughts were running that way, I would select something like a Golok (in the middle) or a Skrama.

OLDSTER, I’m having trouble finding a Gerber Covert without the serrated blade. Would you mind sharing where you found you plain blade?

OK, I’m 62 now, so bit of a dinosaur, and have carried a Buck 110 for decades in a leather holster on my right hip. The knife is versatile, strong, sharpens to a razor edge and has been used to cut or dress everything from newspaper, cardboard, dispatch hogs, deer, elk, rabbits, squirrels, etc. Recently Buck introduced their auto opening version. I bought one and love it. Some folks were converting old Buck 110 to an auto opening knife with mixed results. I have had my Buck 110 auto knife for over a year and it seems to be well made and reliable.

Here’s a couple photos;
