240hz isn't really real and to be honest unless you are playing video games most do well with 60hz but 120 is good. I would pay attention to sound quality as well as picture, it can carry. Also in the store they pump up the video with a setting called vivid and it's pretty harsh when you get it home. A big thing for me is backlighting. All LCD tvs today claim LED technology and I don't care for it. Direct backlighting is very harsh in a dark room and can cause eye strain pretty fast. Edge lighting is a little less harsh but still is a problem in a dark room, I prefer no LED, just plain LCD but that is a technology that has faded away.Samsung seems to own the home TV market at the moment but there is some interesting things coming in 2014 if you can hold off, the 4K stuff is impressive and I thing the industry is going to deal with the LED backlighting issue. I'm also in the market for a set but am holding off to see what this new year brings.

Don't buy Plasma or anything other than LED or LCD. Plasma is much cheaper, but they do not last, nor do they show up well in a bright room.

I'm looking for a good price on a Visio 65" 120 Hz myself, and I guess I will just wait until I find the price low enough to entice me into getting it. What I have is an old style Sony Trinitron, and those things never wear out, and worse this one weights as much as some safes, so I am in no hurry to change it out.

Samsung is an excellent choice

Get an LCD/LED, 1080p, 120hz.

Plasma is ok if you are typically viewing in a very dark room.

I've got an old Sony in the bedroom, I'm older than when I carried it in years ago, I moved it the other day and discovered someone had put lead bricks in the bottom of it. :D:D

It is true that a plasma does not work well in a bright room, but it is incorrect that they don't last. I have a Pioneer plasma that I bought in 2004, it still looks as good as the day I got it.

Subjectively, everyone has different opinions on picture quality. I have yet to see an LCD that can match the picture quality of my Pioneer, let alone a new one.

I have five Samsung TVs in my house from 42" on down and I wouldn't buy any other brand. The one I bought recently was the 40" 1080p 120hz for the den, looks good and runs great.

My wife just got a nice bonus and said to me "honey, do you care if I spend my bonus on a big, nice TV?" I said to her, is this what wives are like in heaven? So we went TV shopping, I just wanted a decent 50" dumb TV but she wanted something really nice. The new "smart" TVs mean they are ran off of the internet so you can play Netflix or Amazon movies or watch the sports packages or do about a zillion other things. She has a Samsung tablet so she wanted a Samsung TV that interfaces with it, she is very hi-tech savy, me....not so much. So we got a 55" Samsung Smart HDMI TV from Best Buy for a little less than a grand, and it is AWESOME, but you need to know that on the HD channels the picture is incredible but the other channels are just OK because we don't have a cable box in the living room to run the HDMI cable to the TV. We are just plugged in to the wall coax jack, so we need to pay the cable company another $8.50 a month to get a box in the living room and buy a $30 HDMI flat cable to run from the box to the TV. It's a little complicated but the picture is SO good I'm willing to spend a little extra to get the perfect picture on all channels.

I bought the 50" LG from Walmart for $600. I'm very pleased with it. Most of these flat screens will benefit from an external sound source. I didn't want to go full surround so I bought a sound bar. Just make sure they are compatible. My first sound bar was analog (rca red and white cables) and my TV was HD with optical output only...so I couldn't connect it without a converter,..the converter was almost as much as the sound bar so I didn't bother.

Something else to remember is that with all the new technologies, you can now get Plasmas at a very good price. And the HD picture is still way above any tube you are used to.

Phil is right on from my experience.
We bought a Samsung 1080p LCD and have been very
happy with it for the last 2 1/2 years. Great picture in HD.
Of course almost 3 years ago the price was closer to 800.00
Good Luck.

Plasma isn't necessarily falling behind the technology curve. Plasma has less motion blur, excellent viewing angle, more accurate colors and deeper blacks than LCD/LED. And they don't have the burn-in problems of earlier plasma TVs. However, plasma is just not as bright as LED. This is glaringly obvious (pardon the pun) in well lit rooms. When consumers go to a well lit showroom like BestBuy and see an LED with brilliant whites and eye-popping colors next to a dingy looking plasma screen... the LED goes home with the consumer and the plasma ends up on clearance sale. Plasma sales continue to decline. Pioneer gave up plasma a few years ago. Panasonic thought they could make a go of it but they have recently thrown in the towel.

I would check out the TV reviews on cnet.com. They say that the prices are best right before the super bowl.
