i'm an old school guy, i still use a landline. yes i have a cell phone but even tho i could use the features of a smart phone by my choice i'm holding out and still using a flip phone.

Back to my landline. i've had the same landline phone number for at least 30 years through a phone company that once had the name of my city as their name then was bought out by a company called central telephone and has gone through a progressive (there's that ugly word) number of name changes over the years, centel, century, century link, etc. i'm sure i missed a couple name changes but century link is the current name.

with each name change service has gone down, features that were once free now have charges/fees and my phone bill has constantly increased over the years as service has gone down.

i have always liked paying my bills face to face in person and all through the years i payed my bill in person at the local office which they closed about 2 years ago now i have to make other arrangements to make my monthly payments.

my bill is due in a couple days and i recieved another rate increase this month so i called customer service to see if something could be done about it.

as a cost cutting move no doubt, they have a phone menu that you have to navigate because they would prefer that nobody has to actually answer the phone and speak with you.

after some wasted time i was able to get a live person who sounded like some guy from india that gave me contradictory reasons for why my bill has gone up again. after going back and forth with him he said that because i was such a long time customer that he would connect me with the loyalty department to see if i qualifed for a loyalty discount.
i told him i was hesitant to be switched over as i would have to start from square one and explain everything we discussed and he said no problem they would have notes and i wouldn't be on hold long and switched me over.

so there i am as a longtime loyal customer on hold and every minute or so a recording told me that someone would be with me shortly and that they appreciated my business. problem is nobody was picking up the phone as i waited and waited and nobody picked up the phone to take care of their "loyal" customer.

i've always hated being put on hold and i seethed more and more as time went by but i hoped that someone was just about ready to pick up the phone. a good 20 minutes went by and i finally said to hell with these people and hung up!

so there you have it, century link phone company takes care of their long time loyal customers by raising the rates and jerking them around when they call to question those rates.

after 30 years with the same number and another 8-10 years at a previous address with the same phone company, the company that my parents and grand parents before me also used i've reached the end of my patience and will most likely drop them and just use my cell phone.

i would really like to tell them where they can shove my loyalty but i don't think that i want to ever call and navigate their phone menu again!

sorry for the long rant, i just wanted to get this out and recommend against anybody ever giving any business to the centurylink phone company!

Ditched my land line several years ago. Don't miss it.

My dad just went though the exact same thing as you. He ditched his land line after 40 years of having the same number. He doesn't like carrying his phone around the house. But he is happy about unlimited calling at much less than his land line.

I suspect phone companies are raising rates to make up for those that are leaving.

Century Link was the land line company I ditched after 28 years with the same number. The fee and unheard of taxes were double of the phone line!

Welcome to the club. Hopefully you won't be getting telemarketers any time soon!

Ivan

Life has passed you by. The landline has gone the way of the dodo bird. Need to give it up . . .

The main/only reason to keep a hardwired land line is for emergency 911 style calls. During all the storms and natural disasters I've experienced in the last 20 years, I've never been able to get a cell phone connection. So, for me the extra cost of a land line is well worth the cost of the piece of mind it gives me.

acc22 you are right the phone companies customer no service loines and constant rate increases just suck swamp water.

I have a land line dedicated to a pacemaker telemetry device that monitors and reports on my heart.

On the few occasions that I have had issues with AT&T, I never got upset at being put on hold as I was sure that I was not their only customer.

My land line will be discounted in 15 days, only reason I kept was my Father-inlaw couldn't hear anything with mobile phone.

He passed two weeks ago, and have no need for the phone anymore, since wife and I both our own phones.

Recently there was a segment on one of the three network evening news broadcasts that reported which state utility commissions had removed regulations requiring phone companies to provide landline service. It also touched on the areas where companies had already started discontinuing service and the impact on the older generations. I was astounded at the trend. Several years ago I too have gave up a hardwired number issued to me at the same location for over two decades. At the time it was sort of an agonizing decision. Do I miss it? Nope. It kinda like voice activated pagers, pay phones, VHS players and 8 track tapes. "Shuff" keeps changing regardless if you like it or not. hardcase60

P.S. I also have a large dislike for automated phone systems and being put on hold/ignore.

I would love to ditch my Century Link land line, but my wife has a problem with any kind of modern technology. It took forever to teach her how to use E-Mail and to upload pictures from her camera to the computer.

Century Link has been creeping up my bill for years. 30¢ here, 50¢ there. Seems like almost monthly. There is a whole long list of fees and taxes on the bill that look made up.

I still have a landline. And DSL for cable. The only "cable" provider is TW, and they have more problems with service than I want to put up with.

In theory we will get AT&T Uverse / fiber soon. I may try that.

I don’t have a landline phone for the following reasons:

The landline phone did not have the ability to text, take pictures and video that can be uploaded to family and friends, down load apps for just about anything, give me directions while on the road, surf the internet and allow me to make and receive calls wherever I might be.

The real beauty of my cell phone is that it cost half as much each month as the landline!

Century Link customer service sucks.
Really sucks.
And the price for a simple land line keeps going up.
Mine is stupid-expensive and I feel like an idiot every time I pay it.

long time loyal customer status dont mean squat these days....as companies change hands your long time status is down sized and you go to the back of the line................inflation WILL raise the price on everything....have a nice day.....

Old Bear made a good point about landline phones working when cell phones won't.

I've had either down or both down. It works both ways.

Another good point made was elderly having problems. My Dad was a good example. A lot of times I would have to run to his place and sort out his phones. That worked both ways and most times he'd push the wrong button and screw up the hand set on the land line/cordless. Then he'd call me on his cell if he could.

Parkinson's sucks.
