My local dealer decided to part with the M 624

Took her home yesterday and cleaned and polished a bit.
Gun itself is like new. I do not care for the grips.Perhaps they were changed out?? Need to get some target grips. From my info these were only made from 1986-1987.

I can find N frame grips for round butts but the square ones are not so common.

Actually S&W has these in Rosewood which are nice but seem too dark, I like Walnut.

The rosewood has a little more red and also dosn't take some types of finishes.
Walnut can be light or dark depending on where it's from and what cut it's from.
I'll say that about rosewood as well as far as color.
Any way it'll look good and maybe you might get lucky and score some factory grips for "safe keeping".

That's a beauty! The 6" version is something I'd like to own someday as well. I sure like my 4". Deacon Deason (RIP) of Bear Hug Grips hand made a pair of birdseye maple Skeeter Skelton design handles from a tracing of my right hand back in the late 80's for me. I had my 624 engraved by Michael Gouse as a Skeeter tribute.

If you think you like your stainless steel .44 Special now, just wait until you shoot it!

Be advised that there was a recall on some 624s due to improper metallurgy in a very few cylinders. If you have the original box, look for a red stamped "C" in a circle on the end label. That indicates it's been checked at the factory and found to be OK. If not, check with S&W customer service for the serial number ranges of the suspect guns. Better safe than sorry.

I'm thinking what do you mean you won't get it back?
If its a bad one wouldn't SW make good on this?

S&W can't replace a defective Model 624 because they haven't made them for 20+ years. They would most likely offer you a currently made revolver of some type in exchange.

Even though the problem is just the cylinder, S&W no longer has these cylinders in stock nor do they plan on making any more. The current Model 24 and fixed sight Model 21 use a cylinder that is longer and has a different extractor assembly.

A good gunsmith could adapt a new cylinder assemly to your gun if it needed it, but it would take some work and would get expensive.

The reason they wouldn't return your revolver is a concern about their possible liability if they return a revolver they know is defectivfe, and you shoot it, and it breaks and hurts you and you sue them.

S&W received a batch of stainless steel for the cylinders that wasn't properly heat treated, and as a result, cylinders might burst upon firing the gun. If you send it to them, they will magnaflux the cylinder to check it. If it is one of the faulty ones, they will not return it to you. Instead they will offer either cash, or a different gun. One with a lock BTW, and not the same type of gun that you sent them.
