Nice looking gun and nice photos, too! I have had a couple 640s and disposed of them because of their weight, but have ended up wishing I had kept one.

Neither of mine came with the smooth stocks your gun has - but I did eventually obtain a set, which now reside on a Model 60. Together with a T-grip, they make about a perfect combination.

I think that is a nice revolver. Of course there are few S&W revolvers that I don't like, other than those with the IL. I had a 940 that I used for my first civilian ccw gun. I traded that away. I could kick myself now, like I could over a bunch of other guns I have traded over the years.

I just came across a very clean used 940-1 for a reasonable price and snapped it up. They are not the lightest to carry but are reasonable and the extra weight is appreciated if one fires magnum rounds in one. My opinion is they make outstanding carry guns. Enjoy yours. I certainly like mine.

I don't see many 640's with the 3 inch barrel. People seem to hold on to them. I'd like one myself.

I had been looking for one for awhile, I had bought one at a Gander mountain in Wilmot, back in 93 or 94, had it about 3 years then traded it for something else. I happened to be playing on GA Saturday night and e amiled the guy and he e mailed me back and it was a done deal. This one was quite reasonable too.

Stan: That's a beautiful revolver! It looks exactly like the gun in this old ad (originally posted by stiab in this thread) so I wonder if yours will also be marked "Tested for +P+":

I have one of the early 2" 640's with +P+ markings, and it's hands-down the best J-frame I've ever owned. Congrats on the great find!

I don't know, but hopefully will find out by Monday. I like the centinail style J frame it is my favorite small gun

The 3" was discontinued in '93 and the Uncle Mike's grips came out in '94 according to the 3rd. ed. SCSW.

USPS told my money order arrived yesterday, so hopefully by Monday or Tuesday i will have it in my hot little hands.

My only problem is I bought 3 guns in the last 2 weeks, this one, the Brit snubby and the metalifed Brit victory and they will all arrive within days of each other. So ken will have to do a multiple sales form.

My wife is happy, I sold two colts in orderto afford these, but I would rather have the Smiths.

Now i will look for a 3 inch 36

Well I picked it up yesterday at shooter's and it is better than in the pictures. It has been fired, but there is very little turn on the cylinder. No scratches on the gun or grips, looks almost brand new.

Kenny at the shop was very impressed. So was I I am very happy to have found this one.
