Hi,

Here are a couple of photos of the 4" SB Model 681 I brought home today. I had been looking for a Model 581 when I came across this gun for $300. It was part of a lot of LE confiscated guns and it doesn't seem to have been too well looked after by the PO's, although it checks out well mechanically. After a good cleaning, I hope to be able to work out most of the dings and scratches and install another set of less chewed up Magna stocks and a T-grip.

Can anyone give me an idea of the manufacture date? The serial # is ABY5***.

TIA,
Matt

Third attempt at photos....

If this doesn't work, I'll have to dig out my Etch-A-Sketch and draw the darn thing.

Any thoughts on the manufacture date?

This thread brings back some good memories. The model 681 was the very first revolver (or gun for that matter) that I ever owned. I bought mine in the summer of 1989 from the "Big Red Pawn Shop" in Shawnee, Oklahoma for $225 OTD.

I took it to CLEET and shot a 94 with it the very first day.

Awesome revolvers they are!

That's nice and if you polish it and replace the grips it will look like new, or just keep it like that and shoot it. A local shop here has one in better condition and they will not budge off of the $400 price.

Thanks for the info and comments. I think it's going to be a great shooter.

I have a soft spot for M&P style fixed sight Smith & Wesson revolvers. My first handgun purchase in 1977 was a 4" SB Model 13. I was a dope to sell it and have been looking for another good one ever since. I'd still like to find a 581.
