Neighbor gave this to me yesterday, needs some cleaning for sure. It is a Model 1904 .22 cal. As you can see in the bottom photo it takes "short, long and extra long" ammo, before it was called 'long rifle'. Should be fun to get it cleaned up and test fire it. Question, has anybody here used RB-17 to clean old gun metal ? Or what is best , the bore is really dirty.

You've got a really good neighbor. Winchester .22s are my passion and addiction. .22 extra longs were their own cartridge. 1902s, 1904s and some Thumb triggers were chambered for S, L, and extra longs. The later 1904s were reclassified as model 04s. The 04s had a regular shot gun style butt plate, not the classy crescent butt plate like the early 1904s.

I always thought the 1904s were one of the prettiest single shot rifles with the metal butt plate and the schnable forearm.

I would just use a good bore cleaner like Butch's Bore shine or Hoppe's #9 and keep working on it. You can clean the metal with a Frontier 45 pad or 0000 steel wool and a lot of oil. I would try something like Formby's furniture cleaner on the stock.

I wouldn't try to polish it to far, better just well cleaned.

You're going to love it.

Thanks guys, I'm soaking the bore overnite and we'll see what we get in the morning. I'm afraid that the old corrosive ammo may have done a job on the bore as it looks pretty rough. I'll let you know how it shoots. I can shoot in my basement so I should have results soon.

What a neet rifle. I sure hope you don't shine her up too much. Some individual or multiple individuals went to a lot of hunting to get her looking the way she does. Appreciate the beauty in a gun with scars and history.

Nice gun nodpete. Just reading that approx. 302,859 were made between 1904-1931. 22 Extra Long chambering started in 1914. Gonna be a fun gun to shoot

One of the very first .22 rifles I had (long gone now) was a very similar appearing Winchester rifle but without a conventional trigger. Rather, there was a thumb trigger right behind the bolt. You pressed down on it with your thumb to fire it. I don't remember the model, but I do remember that they were supposed to have been sold mainly in Australia, and few were sold in the USA. Anyone ever hear of that one?

A very simple yet example of the gun makers art. Thanks for sharing!

If the bore is bad and you what to make a shooter out of her you can have a gunsmith reline the barrel, if he is a good at his work you will not be able to see it was re-lined and if the gunsmith knows his 22 rimfire barrels you will have a very accurate 22.

The thumb trigger is a little scarce, but there are a lot of them in the country, so they're not really rare. They share many similarities with the 1904 and 1902. This one is chambered S, L, and extra long.

Here is the thumb trigger, 1902, model36 9mm shotgun and the 1904.

I like the fancy trigger guard, never even heard of a thumb trigger.
Now I want one.

What is the right name for a trigger guard like that? The way it almost makes a pistol grip out of a straight stock. I am more used to seeing them in black powder rifles.
