My problem with my NEW M&P 40 - has this happened to you?

I just bought a new M&P 40. I am excited about the gun, however, I now have a little issue that we are trying to diagnose. I am wondering if this has happened to you....

I have shot about 100 rounds through the gun already. The last time that I shot the gun, I was going through a magazine shooting away, when I heard click. I thought what was that? A dry fire? Sure enough it was. The magazine dropped a little and it did not insert a new cartridge. I slam the mag back in, rack the slide and fire off a couple more shots and I hear a click... same thing occurred again. I repeat and finish firing the rest of the cartridges. I am starting to wonder if I am hitting the mag release button with my hand or something. Load another magazine and this time I am cognizant of my hand placement. I fire 2 rounds and the whole magazine drops to the table. I re-insert the magazine, fire 2 rounds and again it drops to the table. It does this a 3rd time and it does not matter which magazine I use (I only have 2 anyway).

I know that I am not hitting the mag release. This is somewhat discouraging to me. I take it to the guys at my gun shop and they test fire it to see if it can occur on them. It does... to 2 different guys.

One thinks that it is the mag release button itself and has called in a replacement with S&W. We are going to start there before we decide to send it back.

So, what do you guys think? Has this happened to you? If so, what was determined to be the problem?

Please share with me your thoughts.

Thanks.

This is a known M&P issue. Call S&W; they'll either send you a replacement part or ask to see the pistol.

M&P pistol Forum has an entire thread on this. It is discouraging to see that it is still happening.

Magazine drops had 2 issues at overlapping times. One had to do with the magazine catch, which was redesigned. The other was an issue with frames. Apparently, there were a number of slightly out of spec frames that can either cause or contribute to the issue that got out of the factory. This seemed to be much more an issue with the compacts. You didn't mention the serial number prefix, just because you bought it new, doesn't mean it hasn't been sitting somewhere for quite some time.

If the magazine catch is the issue, changing it solves the problem. At around 4 bucks, a spare in the range bag is insurance if you really shoot alot (hey, parts wear). If the magazine catch change doesn't solve the problem and it's positively not user induced, you'll have to return the pistol to the factory for a new frame, they'll pay postage both ways.

You do have to watch where your digits go. I can't shoot high thumbs on the M&P 'cause I bang the slide catch just enough to cause the occasional slide stop early.

You know, I bet there is nothing the matter with the gun. When I first got my M&Pc .357 sig
I had problems with my thumb hitting the mag release and thought it was the gun also. After reading the threads on this I repositioned my thumbs on my grip to make sure I wasn't hitting the mag release. Since then I have put over 700 rounds thru it and never had a problem. Watch your thumbs. If you have a new M&P the mag drop problem has been addressed by S&W so, Im guessing its your grip.

Dutch, it might not be you.

I bought a full size .40 M&P (209200) Saturday, put 100 rds through it and was having the same problem. Ithought it was me first as well but under heavy concentration and repositioning there is no way.

It seemed like it might be one mag over another but they weren't marked and I was toward the end of ammo so I didn't do a mag vs mag test. I will this weekend, though.

I will let you know.

I also did not have this problem while shooting a friends 9mm & .40 M&P's the previous weekend.

I also dropped a couple of mags when I first bought my M&P 40. During the first 100 rounds I had at least 3 mag drops and I was a little embarrassed as my friends looked on... Especially since i really bragged this gun up to them.

I would have sworn that I was not hitting the mag release, but to my surprise I was. I do shoot thumbs high, and after making a slight adjustment to my style, I rid myself of the issue.

I am now at 800+ trouble free rounds.

Man, I LOVE my M&P... Even more than my Springfield 1911 and my Sig P220.

Thanks again for the replies. I am still waiting on my gun shop to get some new mag releases sent to them for a swap out.

Currently, I am going to try just firing the gun with the mag release switched to the other side. I think that we tested it that way and it did work.

And BTW, where is the M&P forum as mentioned up above? I am assuming that it is not a part of this forum on this site, correct?

I've had reports from other forums with magazine issues on the MP. Mag. release has been the major culprit.

swap the mag release to the other side and put a few mags through it, see if it still drops 'em
