My Dad is from Holyoke, MA, where the PAL Company made blades for the war effort during WW2.

Wasn't the first one a 16"?

First from the top was a bayonet from a different maker with a 16” blade until it was cut down by PAL. You can tell by the gutter running almost to the tip of the blade.

Second from the top was a purpose built 10 inch blade.

Fourth from the top is a bayonet for the M1 carbine that was based on the design for the M3 knife.

I read two things about the M3. (1) It was designed to conserve scarce materials. (2) It is often faked for sale today.

A ways back when I was buying a lot of M1 Garands from the CMP they had a batch of bayonets come in. I picked up a bunch of them for decent prices. I counted 15 in that bucket. 1 SA 1918 full size, 12 either cutdowns or WWII made and a couple M4's.

Nice collection!

Fighting knife and bayonet collecting is a “rabbit hole” I’ve only dipped my toes into, but I commend you for getting as far as you have. Very cool.

To John Rippert: I hope you found some obscure makers in that bucket!
(How long ago was that?!)
Even, if the more common makers, you just don’t see much of the WWII stuff, anymore.

Must have been 15 years or so.

Browsed through them.

Imperial made M5A1
16inch SA 1918
10inch SA 1918 Bowie point cutdown
10inch SA 1913 spear point cutdown
Personal favorite 10inch SA 1906 Bowie point cutdown.
10inch U.F.H. 1943
10inch U.F.H.
10inch AFH
10inch AFH
10inch U. C. 1942 Bowie point cutdown (faint crossed cannons)
10inch U. C.
10inch PAL 1943
10inch OL 1943 spear point cutdown
10 inch EN-S Greek
M4 from Greece, maker unknown

When looking for info on the Greek EN-S I found the M4 on the same page. Mine was copper plated and coated in some kind of black paint like substance. I removed the black coating and ended up with a interesting looking rosy/coppery colored M4. Here is the link to the Greek page on the Worldbayonets site.

If you don’t have Cole’s book look for them, expensive but well worth the $$$$. Bought mine for around $20 each, way back.
Just sold a mint PAL M-1 for $200 to a “ young collector” .
