(I have received permission to post this. Thank you again, Lee.)

I have written about our dogs many times on this forum. And some of you know about our work with animal rescue. My wife does the majority of the planning and I am voluntold what to do. Several years ago, my wife, Debbie, became involved with a rescue aid group called “Be Like Henry”. Henry was a mixed breed dog that was fostered by a lady in New Jersey. It soon became obvious that Henry was very much at ease in his new surroundings and quickly became a “foster fail”. Henry became a certified “therapy dog” and would visit hospitals, retirement homes, etc to help folks heal and bring joy to their lives. His owner also wanted to help rescues and would hold raffles to raise money for that purpose. If a shelter contacted them, BLH would do what they could to help. They never sent money but would send pallets of dog food, medical supplies, anything they needed and asked for.

Unfortunately, on New Years Day, 2025, Henry’s owner passed away. There was no mechanism in place to continue the work that she was doing. My wife and I discussed this loss to the animal rescue community. It did not take long for a plan to form and my wife has started a new not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) group called “Be Like Cheryl”. It is named for Henry’s owner, Cheryl Pliskin.

Be Like Cheryl

Please, at your convenience, take a moment to read about what they do. I am not asking for donations, (but the organization will not turn them down), merely your support. Share the site with your friends. If you know of shelters with needs, either let Be Like Cheryl know of the needs or put the shelter in touch with them. We hope to continue Cheryl’s dream. In the first month of operation my wife has raised funds for two pallets of dogs food to be delivered. She also sends thank you notes and care packages to the workers at animal shelters to remind them they are special. (In the last several years, there has been an increase in the number of suicides among shelter helpers.)

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I will keep this forum informed of what is happening.

Kevin

Kevin, I have said in the past how impressed I am with how you and your wife care for the rescues in your house. Now you're branching out to take care of rescues in shelters.
Once again, on behalf of the human race, thanks for making us look good.
I checked out the website of Be Like Cheryl. Somehow my cat got on the keyboard and $30 was donated. I knew that cat was smarter than me.

Anybody that cares enough about rescues that does what y'all are doing deserves an award of some kind . Over the years we've rescued our share of dogs , they are family members . We just rescued a beautiful male Aussie , our first ever male . He was winning shows until he hit 6 months and an underbite showed up , so no more shows . They kept him for a while , constantly caged , until someone talked them into doing the right thing . So , your non-profit is dear to my heart and a donation in Bogie's name is coming .

Words cannot fully express my admiration and appreciation for people like you and your wonderful wife.

My family and our relatives are huge animal lovers and have rescued more dogs and cats than I can count. My wife and I donate to a half dozen animal rescue organizations.

Living here in the Arizona desert life for animals is hard. I’ve rescued bunnies, baby hummers, doves, and even a baby Gecko lizard. I’ve saved hundreds of honey bees from drowning in our pool.

I just fixed the link in the opening post.

And please, my involvement is minimal. My wife has done all of this. I am merely along for the ride. And often, not even that!

This past weekend Deb had to go to New Jersey to pick up items from Cheryl’s basement that had not yet been raffled. I was scheduled to work Friday, Saturday and Monday. Deb rented a van, drove to Jersey on Saturday, loaded on Sunday, drove home on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday we unloaded the items. Now it all needs to be inventoried, described and cataloged. Once that happens items can be raffled.

My part in all this, I will measure the barn and order the materials to build a new storage room, 12x44’. Then I call an Amishman I know who will frame the wall for us.

Like I said, I am merely along for the ride. Deb has this project totally until control.!

May 1st update.

As of May 1st, 11,200 pounds of dog food has been shipped to various shelters that requested help.

Also, donations have been sent to various Veteran groups. Cheryl’s nephew, Pete Tab, was killed in Afghanistan by a suicide bomber. Once a month, a raffle is held to benefit a Veterans groups.

If you know of rescues or Veterans groups that need help, please send a request through the “Be Like Cheryl” website.

Thank you all for your support.

It's a wonderful thing you two are doing. Dog food is not cheap.
Yes, it is an expensive part of a family’s budget. Many do not understand that when they first get a pet.

Around us, the food pantries often get requests for dog/cat food. Many do not provide it. Herself is part of the Animal Welfare Center of Ashtabula County and offers support at that level.

A small correction, please. While it is not a one person operation, it is all Deb’s efforts and hard work that drives it. I am merely the warehouseman, making sure the raffled items get packaged and shipped in a timely fashion.

Update for May.

May was a good month for Be Like Cheryl. It was the first month we earned enough to ship pallets of dog food to four shelters that need it!

In March we were able to ship 3 pallets, April shipped 3 and May shipped 4, bringing the total to 16000 pounds of dog food shipped to help shelters feed their dogs. And donations to Veterans groups each month, and small appreciation notes to shelter workers.

Thank you all for sharing the information and website. The more folks who know about this work, the more that can be accomplished.

Kevin

June update

We were only able to ship two pallets of food this month, bringing the total amount of dog food shipped to 17,600 pounds. A donation was made to a group that supplies and trains service dogs for Veterans that need them.

Thank you to all that support Be Like Cheryl with your thoughts and good wishes.
