(I have received permission to post this. Thank you again, Lee.)
I have written about our dogs many times on this forum. And some of you know about our work with animal rescue. My wife does the majority of the planning and I am voluntold what to do. Several years ago, my wife, Debbie, became involved with a rescue aid group called “Be Like Henry”. Henry was a mixed breed dog that was fostered by a lady in New Jersey. It soon became obvious that Henry was very much at ease in his new surroundings and quickly became a “foster fail”. Henry became a certified “therapy dog” and would visit hospitals, retirement homes, etc to help folks heal and bring joy to their lives. His owner also wanted to help rescues and would hold raffles to raise money for that purpose. If a shelter contacted them, BLH would do what they could to help. They never sent money but would send pallets of dog food, medical supplies, anything they needed and asked for.
Unfortunately, on New Years Day, 2025, Henry’s owner passed away. There was no mechanism in place to continue the work that she was doing. My wife and I discussed this loss to the animal rescue community. It did not take long for a plan to form and my wife has started a new not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) group called “Be Like Cheryl”. It is named for Henry’s owner, Cheryl Pliskin.
Be Like Cheryl
Please, at your convenience, take a moment to read about what they do. I am not asking for donations, (but the organization will not turn them down), merely your support. Share the site with your friends. If you know of shelters with needs, either let Be Like Cheryl know of the needs or put the shelter in touch with them. We hope to continue Cheryl’s dream. In the first month of operation my wife has raised funds for two pallets of dogs food to be delivered. She also sends thank you notes and care packages to the workers at animal shelters to remind them they are special. (In the last several years, there has been an increase in the number of suicides among shelter helpers.)
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
I will keep this forum informed of what is happening.
Kevin
