The SCSW says the 6 1/2 inch barrel was discontinued from the 27-2 lineup in 1967 (pp195), and that the serial numbers changed from the 'S' series to the 'N' series in the 1969 to 1970 time frame (pp398). A 27-2 with an early 'N' serial number and a 6 1/2 inch barrel sold last week on GB (in nickel no less), so would it have to have been re-barreled?

Maybe...never say never with Smith, it could be a barrel was found at the factory and sent out on a later model, could have been a custom order, could be that (heaven forfend!) the catalog was wrong. It would certainly be one I would letter.

You might get some interesting reading in your 3rd edition SCSW on Page 6, all the fine folks here who helped with corrections to the latest edition. Heck, you might get your name in the next one from this!

27-2 6 1/2" Nickel

Don't believe everything you read--have an N serial 6 1/2" that shipped in '72--barrels were still available, and although it wasn't catalogued, still would have been delivered if ordered and parts were on hand. BTW--if it's correct, the buyer of that one really hit the jackpot. N frame 6 1/2" nickel .357s are SCARCE.

S&W shipped 27-2s with a 6 1/2-inch barrel as late as 1974 even though the barrel length was dropped in 66-67.
