N & X Frame Scope Bases for Picatinny Rail equipped revolvers

Hello,

I'm having a few problems finding scope bases that secure to the factory drilled and tapped holes (located under the rear sight) for my:

1) Model 629 Weighted Barrel series .44 Magnum N-Frame

2) 460XVR Bone Collector .460 Magnum X-Frame

I strongly prefer to use the factory drilling/tapping under the rear sight due to the better physical and visual balance of locating my Leopold 2.5-8x EER scopes there rather than on the Picatinny rails situated on the barrel. And yes I know the Picatinny rail sections were specifically added to these guns to allow scopes to be mounted directly onto them - I just think they look really dumb when you do!

The bases listed for sale are too long and the forward Picatinny rail sections on the barrels prevent these being fitted properly as they tilt the base upwards at the front.

I'd prefer not to machine these bases to shorten them, and I have this one

and it suffers from the problem listed above - and the only others I can find are these two:

Smith Wesson scope mount X frame .500 .460

And

Warne Matte Scope Base For Smith & Wesson X Frame FREE S&H M500S, M500M, M500G. Warne Riflescope Mounts & Bases.

These last two are even longer - meaning they will also bump up against the Picatinny Rails on the barrels of these two guns.

Any suggestions?

The only short system I am aware of is the Leupold "Classic S&W" and it requires their special scope rings to be used. I have not used it personally.

I do have and have used the Warne and similar on the X-frame (I use the 2.5x8 Leupold's also). I only use them now on the stand 8" or 5" model 460 when testing.

I find they place the scope to far back for my liking and also raises the scope higher creating sighting issues.

I'd just shorten a Weigand base. Don't think you have a lot of other options. Super simple task. Why do you not prefer doing the mod?

I have it on my 29-3.
It's a very solid mount.

460XVR 14" Hunter scope mount

I have the same problem with my 460XVR Hunter with 14" barrel. I have a 1.25-4x32 pistol scope on it but it is too far forward for my long arms and eye relief won't let me see through it unless i'm on the lowest setting. (1.25x) This is what i'm doing, go get this base mount for $35 at amazone...

I just ordered it so don't have it yet but this is a $70 mount that at this price, cut cut cut...

I have the same issue with a 6" PC 629 I just picked up that has the same integral scope mount on the barrel. I typically mount scopes on my revolvers to work up loads. Because the barrel is only 6", all my scopes were long enough the front of the scope sat beyond the muzzle of the barrel using the integral mount. Not something I was keen on and wasn't going to risk damaging a scope from muzzle blast.

My wiegand mount wouldn't mount because of interference with the integral scope base. Thought about cutting it down, but prefer mounting rings as far apart as possible to improve support. A cantilever type mount would work if you can find one you know for sure will fit before buying.

Just picked up an EGW scope base. Midway has them on sale. From the looks, it may work and not interfere with the integral mount. I don't have a whole lot of money invested if it doesn't.

Just wanted to update. The EGW scope base worked. There was some interference with the integral scope mount on the barrel, but it was very slight. The EGW has a thin rib underneath that was touching. 5 minutes with a fine file/stone, done deal. No interference and I will be able to mount a scope to check loads.

I got my mount and yes it is too long. I cut it off and gave it a nice round edge. Fits and works great. The only problem i can see is the mount is aluminum and i'm not sure if it will hold up to the kick this thing has got. Stainless steel will cost $70 but can also be cut down to fit if you don't want the aluminum thing.
