Maybe an age old question, but for those that put a name to their S&W handguns, is it customary to give specific handguns, male names, female names, gender neutral names, or it doesn't matter?

Other than a few exceptions, I don't have "pet" names for my firearms.

One of those exceptions is my regular carry gun, a S&W model 38 Bodyguard. I call it "Quasimodo".

More because it's appropriately descriptive rather than gender related.

I think I've named three guns, in my lifetime.

One female - named after a specific girl, who was also tall, skinny and loud.

One non-specific - My Gun. As in, "Where did heck did I put My Gun? Anybody seen My Gun. It's time to leave for work and I can't find My Gun".

One male- Justin. Justin Case.

So, unlike boats, I don't think they are all of one sex.

Mine all have names... I pick their names and that determines their sex.

I've always tried to pick something that relates to the gun's maker, model or characteristic.

My Beretta 92FS is Bretta (F)
... my only 357 magnum S&W is Maggie (F)
... the Sig "P"232 is Little Pete (M)
... the XD"m" is Emma (F)
... the Browning classic Hi-Power is Moses (M)
and so on...

BTW, my wife thinks I nuts giving them names.

I have one with a name; a pre 1905 Westly-Richards underlever double in 450 3.25 Nitro xpress named "William & Mary". Walnutred has a 1911 named "Watchdog". And John Wayne had a derringer named "Bettsy" in "BIG JAKE".

My 629-4 mountain gun is named "Mangus"

My 337 is named "BO-whompa" which is an old indian word that means "make big fire go BOOM real loud and hurt hand"

My duck blind is named "Lucille"

My Suburban is known as "old Blue, big blue or just blue" . That's 'cause it's blue.

My dog's name is "Stainz"
Any more questions????

The only time that I give my guns a name is when I have a problem. It is not a nice name then.

When I was 18 I named my first Model 10 "Mister Thirty Eight."

A Colt Model 1905 .45 automatic came my way with a history of south of the border usage. I call it Pancho Villa.

None of them have real names, but my wife and I had a code word for whatever I happened to be carrying at the time.
We refered to it as "Pants". As in she might ask " Do you have your pants on?"

I called it pants because its job is to cover my butt. ;)

I only have two handguns that I consider having names. One is an Ithaca 1911A1 that we call Watch Dog, the other is a S&W 10-6 that I have come to think of as Patrick. Thanks to the help of a forum member I discovered this revolver was sold to NYPD officer Patrick J Cassidy in 1967.

Correction, I also have a left handed, 50 caliber flintlock rifle I built in the late 70's named Thumper.

Other than calling my j-frames "noisy crickets" I don't have names for any of my guns.
My wife probably has some less than complementary names for a few of them though! :D

My current "varmint" rig, a Remington Model 7 SS in .223, w/Leupold 1.5-4x scope, is "affectionately" named after its predecessor, as, "Death Ray II".

I don't much care for anthropomorphising or otherwise attributing cute names and such to inanimate objects. In a perverse way, hoplophobes (anti-gunners) do this, that is, imputing an innate evil to simple inanimate tools, by giving them intimidating names --- "assault rifles", "cop-killer" bullets, and so forth.

I guess if you want to call your smokepole "Old Betsy" there's no harm or foul, but let's be careful that we don't acquiesce to the Brady Bunch position, that all guns are "possessed" of some inherent evil force, able to act on its own to do evil, and compel its owner to behave badly.

Genderless

I named a fantastic mouser that was my buddy for 18 years Gray Cat. My favorite S&W shooter is Parts-N-Pieces Boomer and a S&W that I should have known better than to buy is Rusty Turkey. They are all genderless but the cat was spayed so that's reality.

You can be glad I didn't name you.

Gil

Napolean......

My M&P 360 is rightfully named "Napolean". At @15oz. loaded, it is one mean little .357 magnum.

I've only had one that had a name, and she was already named when I got her. Her name was Erma Luger. Alas, she was kind of cute, but just didn't meet my needs, and we parted ways.
