I was at the local fun shop today and found a J frame Smith, it was nickel plated, heavy (stainless or steel), shrouded hammer, rubber grips, app 1 7/8" barrel,pre-lock, non pinned/recessed. I looks like a 638 or 649 but the heavy gun with the nickel finish doesnt jive with my S&W history book. They wanted enough for it I wanted to do a little research but cant find such a critter.I am 99% sure it was a 6?? with no dash. Thanks for the help.

The M638 is an Airweight, it would weigh about 15 oz.
The M649 is all steel, and weighs about 23 oz.
It could be a nickle M49, which would weigh the same as the M649. If it's not pinned it is later than 1982. J-Frames were never recessed in the centerfire calibers.

I am quite sure it was a 6 series... but I cant find anyhting on nickel plated 649... unless they are that rare.

If it was a stainless gun, than it won't be a nickel gun because all stainless guns begin with a 6 where as a nickel gun will be the same number as a blued gun. For instance, a nickel 27 is the same number as the blued gun, but stainless its the 627. Is it a totally concealed hammer like the 640 or a shrouded hammer like the 649?
Here is what a 649 looks like.

If it has the shrouded hammer and is all steel, either a nickel model 49 or stainless 649. Not much point to nickel plate a stainless gun :) . If it had no visible hammer (DAO), a model 640 or a nickel model 40.

Better yet, go back and look at the model number...hope this is helpful.

The hammer was shrouded not hammerless like a DAO. I am goin to have to call the dealer in the A.M. because I THOUGHT it had a 6## type number but I know for sure it was Nickel plated. What would the value be on a "as new" no box mod 49 no dash nickel plated be? Thanks for the help so far.

I'd say either a nickel 49 or possibly a highly polished 649.

It may be stainless that looks like it's plated if someone has polished it highly... several posts on this forum have discussed various techniques and materials to use to acquire just such a highly polished finish on stainless. If it's a Model 6##, I would expect that to be the case. Somebody else will have to chime in with values as I don't keep up with these particular models.
