These are mine:

5.) She Wore a Yellow Ribbon

The Duke, John Ford, an American flag; 'nuff said!

4.) Sands of Iwo Jima

Steely-eyed Sgt. Stryker saving America!

3.) Legend of the Lost

Steamy action adventure that works so well.

2.) Rio Bravo

Good guys vs the bad guys! Good guys win!

1.) The Searchers

John Wayne as confederate veteran Ethan Edwards! Best western ever made!

Man, that is almost impossible, just 5? In no order.

The Alamo

Sands of Iwo Jima

True Grit

Big Jake

McLINTOCK

The Searchers is at the top of my list as best western, best John Wayne movie and way up the list as one of the best movies of any kind ever made. The next four on my list can change depending of how I feel when I see it and what I had for breakfast that day.

Stagecoach
Flying Tigers
Fighting Seabees
Shepherd of the Hills
Wake of the Red Witch

One from the early 1930s that most may not be aware of - Baby Face. In no way is it an action film and JW did not have a starring lead role, but the movie is surprisingly engaging. It shows up on TCM every so often.

Red River

Runner ups:

High and the Mighty
They Were Expendable
Rio Bravo
True Grit
The Calvary Trio (She Worn A Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grand, Fort Apache- they count as One, cause you can't just see one without the others)

Most of his best movies were Westerns .

1. The Searchers (beautiful movie, one of my all time favorite movies)
2. The Shootist
3. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
4. Big Jake
5. Hondo

I like the Cohen Brothers/Jeff Bridges remake of True Grit better than the John Wayne version.
