February 20th is National Handcuff Day. February 20, 1912 was when George A Carney was granted his patent no. 1,017,955 on his new "swing-thru arm" design for a new handcuff. James M. Gill purchased this patent and on June 22, 1914 and started the Peerless Handcuff Co. After James Gill met with Joseph Wesson, Joseph Wesson along with Edward S. Pomeroy designed a new improved lock mechanism for Carney's handcuff design, and filed for a patent on January 2, 1915 and on October 19, 1915 was granted patent no. 1,157,135. With these two patents the now "Modern Handcuff" was born and the Peerless Handcuff Company began, having the handcuffs manufactured by Smith & Wesson for them.
Shown are the two patent drawings and an example of the Peerless Patent Model Handcuff manufactured by Smith & Wesson.

Purchased my Pearless cuffs in 1968 (we were not issued handcuffs), used them for the next 30 years & I still have them.

That train went off the tracks very quickly.

I would have thought this would have fallen closer to Valentine’s Day!

I still have my first set of handcuffs purchased in 1978. They were S&W Model 90 Nickel. I carried them until retirement (37 Years). I still have the original box and wax paper.

Xfuzz,
Nice example.
The Model 926 Airweight Polished and the Model 925 Airweight Nickel were both introduced in 1958.
The Model 926 Airweight Polished were manufactured through 1978.
The Model 925 Airweight Nickel was dropped from production by 1968.
Attached are examples of both plus a pair of Model 926 Factory Engraved by Domingos Joaquim.
Dave
P.S. Xfuzz, yours appear to be a Model 925 Airweight Nickel in a M-926 Airweight Polished box.

Here is a view of each side and the factory letter I received from Roy Jinks.

PS. Dave are you coming to Tulsa? Bringing that beautiful collection? I would love to see in person.

6518John,
Yes I will be in Tulsa. My display will be all handcuff models and most versions of each model, manufactured by S&W for the Peerless Handcuff Company & all Peerless handcuffs manufactured post S&W that used the Wesson's, Pomeroy & Neal patents. In addition, I will display all models S&W manufactured under their logo beginning in 1952 through present day. I will also have several special examples I received from Roy Jinks, copies of patents, scanned copies of contracts, work orders, in-house communications for the handcuffs manufactured for Peerless, and much more handcuff related items. Yes, the engraved Domingos Joaquim set will be there along with the hand carved granite eagle head pencil holder by Domingos Joaquim.
This will probably be the only time I will display this extensive collection. I have displayed parts before at previous symposiums, but not the complete collection that I have now.
My last big display was at the Kansas City symposium in 2013 and I displayed it in a jail cell I constructed. The jail cell will not begin to hold the display this year, so it will not be there.
