Does it strike anyone else odd that the Navy named a 419-foot combat ship after Gabrielle Giffords?

Not to take anything away from Gabrielle, but she never served in the military, and as far as I know, she's never done anything heroic or special. She was a congresswomen, and she was a victim of a madman's violence. And she's now a major gun control advocate. To me, that resume doesn't come close to making the grade for deserving to have a Navy ship named after her. We have so many *real* heroes, especially military heroes, I just think it's odd to name a combat ship after a civilian victim of a madman. And I'm not sure what message this is intended to send to those who will serve aboard her. What am I missing?

Dilution of Ships' Names

vt shooter, you're not missing anything.

The same influential groups and very highly placed government officials that forced that ship's less than heroic name on the Navy, will pressure the Navy to name the next ship the "____________" (use your imagine and fill in the blank).

I wouldn't wish what happened to Congresswoman Giffords on anyone. I admire her courage and determination, even though she and I don't have much to agree on politically. Many of our Congressional members are dedicated and very hard working. Occasionally, we get to hear about them, too - instead of the other bums that give Congress a bad name it generally deserves. I had the privilege of serving in three branches of our military over the years, and while my feeling is that Cong. Giffords deserves some recognition for the inspiration she has been to many of our citizens that naming a military fighting ship in her honor is a misplaced. There are other symbols of our nation that could wear her name. And - I also feel there is a long, long list of servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country who should receive the honor of a military ship being named after them - first, last and always!

She is anti gun, but has a ship with guns on it named after her. I kinda like the irony. :D

Not only shouldn't any politician's name be on a warship other than combat veterans who gave the ultimate or Medal of Honor recipients but to add to the irony here's a photo that ran with the story.

Wouldn't matter to me if they named it the Daffy Duck long as it does what it's supposed to do.

I knew it wouldn't take long for this to show up on gun forums.

I'm not a fan of the idea of naming ships after people in the first place. I liked the tradition of naming them after battles like Midway, Coral Sea, Yorktown, Lexington and Saratoga. And of course the Big E!
