House Bill 86 was introduced this morning. Right out of the national play book.

Short title: Gun Violence Prevention Act.

Full title is (yes, this is the actual title)

A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT TO REQUIRE A PERMIT FOR THE PURCHASE OF AN ASSAULT WEAPON OR LONG GUN; TO REQUIRE A 72-HOUR WAITING PERIOD BEFORE A PURCHASED FIREARM MAY BE DELIVERED OR OTHERWISE POSSESSED; TO PROHIBIT THE SALE OF AN ASSAULT WEAPON OR LONG GUN TO PERSONS UNDER A CERTAIN AGE; TO PROHIBIT THE SALE OR POSSESSION OF A BUMP STOCK OR TRIGGER CRANK; TO REQUIRE THE SAFE STORAGE OF A FIREARM; TO REVISE RECIPROCITY LAW FOR A CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT; TO REQUIRE THE REPORTING OF A LOST OR STOLEN FIREARM; TO REQUIRE ANY PERSON WHO OWNS A FIREARM TO CARRY FIREARM LIABILITY INSURANCE; TO LIMIT THE SIZE OF AMMUNITION MAGAZINES; TO REPEAL THE PREEMPTION OF LOCAL REGULATION OF FIREARMS; AND TO ALLOW THE DESTRUCTION OF A SEIZED FIREARM.

It stands little chance of passage; however, their real purpose is to "compromise" to just take a few of our constitutional protections, i.e. the "Slippery Slope."

On the Watch!

I am so tired of the way they use smoke and mirrors to try and slip something by us. Most people will not even read that whole title. And you are absolutely right, they pile a lot of things that are way over stepping our 2nd Amendment rights, and they say "Well OK how about just these two things! We have to watch carefully and make sure we have our representatives contact info at hand. Every time something like this comes up I am sending all of them a letter. The GOA, Gun Owners of America, is a good source on the political 2nd Amendment scene, both nationally and at the state level.

Very depressing to see this **** proposed in a state like North Carolina. Many of these are also proposed here, in addition to what they passed last year. A perfect example of the slippery slope, and how these people cant be trusted, is the waiting periods. What did these people all claim to assure us back when background checks became the new fad? That they were instant, so not an inconvenience. But here they are again with the not so instant waiting periods. We have to take the no compromise approach, fight everything, because they will eventually come back for everything.

The worst part is those who sponsored & voted for this bill actually believe it will make people safer.

Insurance... North Carolina is owned by the insurance industry among others. Too many over-educated, sophisticated, superior thinking folks getting elected to public office that are easily lead into trendy political positions funded by questionable organizations.

What riles me is that the legislature in state after state fails their constituents by not legislating away some of the rights of criminals who use firearms to commit crimes; instead, they focus their attention on the silent, law-abiding folks that give them the power to limit their options to protect themselves. Our representatives could start with legislation that provided for no bail, no plea bargaining, no parole, a mandatory one year sentence that a budget minded, conviction rate focused prosecutor could not bargain away and a lenient judge cannot set aside. This one year would have to be served before the court sentence time started.

The 72 hour wait is aimed at gun show sales. Makes shipping and receiving documentation necessary rather than the old cash-and-carry.

Besides, in NC you already had your waiting period while the Sheriff looked you up for a $5 purchase permit, of if you go the concealed permit for ID cash-and-carry route (no background check) you had to wait on and pass your concealed permit background check.

I use to live there and never had a problem getting permit to purchase or carry but the county sheriff was pro 2nd.It could be different if the sherif was against private citizen having handguns .

It isn't about gun control. It's all about control, and eating the elephant one bite at a time, isn't it?

Interested forum members who are interested may read the text of this bill...all 13 pages of it...by clicking here.

One story about this is here. Another is here.

How ironic that the bill was introduced yesterday. So Happy Valentines Day to those who live in the state, courtesy of our North Carolina legislature.

UPDATE: FEBRUARY 27, 2019

House Bill 86, the Gun Violence Prevention Act, passed its first reading in the House on February 18, 2019.

The bill was then referred to the Committee on Judiciary that same day. As far as I know now, the bill is still in committee.

This restrictive bill may be moving slowly through the process, but it is moving...make no mistake about that.

North Carolina gun owners still have time to contact your representatives and express your thoughts on this ridiculous and poorly thought out legislation. Legislators' main priority is keeping their jobs. They understand votes and the voices of their constituents.

You need to make yourselves heard. Don't wait for the NRA or GOA or Grass Roots North Carolina to speak for you. What are you waiting on?
