Yesterday I went to a local gun shop/range to renew my CHL. After 1 hour in class the people there for renewal went to the range for the shooting proficiency. The instructor was giving everyone the details how this was going to work. He told us to load 5 rds. in a magazine and if we had more than 1 mag go ahead and load 5 in each. Then he reminded us how the shooting was going to go. The he said prepare to shoot and insert your mag in your gun. I did this and turned around for the ready signal. The guy 3 lanes down from me appeared to be having trouble. The instructor headed his way. Then it happened "BOOM". Everything stopped and I headed for the rear wall. The instructor got the problem solved and we moved on with the shooting.
I would of never thought that would of happened especially it being a renewal class.
Just a reminded to everyone----be careful out there, the unexpected might happen at any time.

It must of went down range as no one was hit. No one said anything about it hitting one of the partions between the lanes. It really was scary and loud. I hope I never see that again.

Whew! Another near disaster averted... but in a renewal class? Think l'll check my carry gun, clean it and get to the range this week for some practice. You know what they say... practice makes perfect!

I think your title is a little misleading.

It may have been a ND, but not in the class (room) as the title suggest, but in the range. At least he was following range rules and had the muzzle pointed down range like he should have.

You stated he appeared to be having a "problem" and then the gun discharged. It may not have been a "ND". He may have intended to pull the weapon, but we (even you only three lanes away) are not really sure what happened.

Glad we don't have to go through that here in Indiana. All i need is to get shot at a training class by somebody not smart enough to keep their finger off the trigger. Did that person pass the class?

Yep a round going off before is is supposed to can be surprising!! Good gun handling skills must be learned and used often. There are too many people that do not get to the range often enough. I bought my kids and daughter in law 32 mag revolvers. They have shot hundreds of bullets and understand a revolver is the ultimate "point and pull" weapon. They also tried my semi autos but they all had problems getting the slide back to the lock position.
It is good the instructor did not get real excited and everyone in the class learned something from it.

Yes he did pass. I think he should of been asked to leave the range area.
As far as I'm concerned it was the "shooting proficiency" part of the class.

WOW! One must wonder what it would take to fail. If a shooter has a ND whilst getting instructions on the range they surely are not demonstrating "shooting proficiency."

Happy no one was hurt.

Be safe.

Good or bad depending on how you look at it, in MOST of NY once you get a concealed carry license, it's for life, no renewals. :) There's no daily, monthly or annual limit on the amount of purchases.:) The exceptions are, predictably, NYC and a few surrounding counties.:(

I don't think I have enough details to make the call on if the shooter was totally wrong or not. Maybe when he racked one into the chamber it fired then. Like with a stuck firing pin. I don't for sure if he pulled the trigger or not.
Maybe the instructor made the proper call, maybe not.

Get me all the details then I can decide.

I know the pistol was a Glock and he brought it into the classroom in the black plastic case it comes in. He was having some difficulty loading the mags at a table on the back wall of the range. After the mags were loaded he took them to his lane and that was when it happened. I am happy no one was hurt. It could of turned out very different.

I know more than a few folks who have renewed at least once and almost never carry. Some of them are not even very familiar with their carry guns.

What ever happened to finger streight outside the trigger guard and thumb on safety until ready to fire (I know Glock safety is on the trigger, so moot point). Sounds like someone will listen to the Instructor next time and the rest got an experience they won't forget.
