Being married to a 2nd grade teacher means I have to pay attention to back to school sales (buying crayons for one kid is ok, buying for 25 sucks) and lots of stuff gets printed at home..

They gave her a cheap (sub $100) HP laser B&W for her classroom but she does not actually get toner every year.

Anyway, the samsung laser at home finally died (USB device not found, etc) so I'm looking for a replacement.

I'm pretty much looking at color laser, either Brother or HP. Also considering Epson inkjet as some of theirs are pretty good on ink cost. Would like an all in one in case I needed to scan stuff, but is not a deal breaker. Looking at $250 or less, Amazon shows several in that range.

Any recommendation or words of advice? My wife says a gun forum would not be able to help, so prove her wrong :D

I got my wife a Canon Pixma MP 280 three years ago for around $40 at Wally World and it never misses a beat. It copies, scans and prints like a charm. For that price I am extremely impressed with it. AND, she can print her own photos without my help. It really gave her independence on her own system. I would never have purchased this for myself prior to seeing it's performance. Now I am considering it my next brand when mine needs replacement.

All in one means if anything breaks, replace everything. Get an HP Laser and a flatbed scanner. Use a software FAX if you should ever have a need.

I have used Epson for my last two printers and have been very pleased with their performance... my current printer is an Epson model NX415.

good print quality, easy to use, scans, and ink is cheap..i buy cartridges on ebay for about $2 each.

I'd buy the printer with the cheapest replacement ink cartridges.

My last one is a HP Deskjet 3050 that came form WalMart. I bought it because it uses the same cartridges as my wife's work printer. We only have to stock one type that way. I'm happy with it.

Had an HP 4600 that was a piece of Shiite. While trying to round up an obsolete ink cartridge for an old HP all-in-one that had belonged to my FIL at the local computer shop, the tech said he'd just had a couple of printers dropped off by a woman who wanted to get rid of them and I was welcome to one if I wanted a project. Came home with an HP8500 color all-in-one that turned out to have absolutely nothing wrong with it...a $500 printer for $0!

I replaced my obsolete Dell 3600 earlier this year with the HP Officejet Pro 8600. It will fax, scan, and print, has duplex printing, and has wireless connection to my home computer network. The ink supplies are reasonable in cost, and I got coupons for free ink cartridges when I bought it at Office Depot. All for around $400.

Been doing this stuff for years..IMHO I would recommend an HP LaserJet of some model. These are TONER printers not the expensive, crummy INK cartridges.

A toner ink printer is like the ones in most offices and run like a champ. You can use the non HP brand toner refills with these with no problems.

I have automatically gone......

I have automatically gone for HP for over 30 years. But not any more. This HP printer I have now is HOSTILE and stops printing unless you replace ALL four of the ink cartridges. Their reason? They say even printing black the printer uses the color cartridges. I bought this because it has separate, large cartridges. I believe they hold 1 cc of ink apiece.

I have an HP Envy 45 series. It prints, scans, & makes copies. It sure solved my desk space problem I had with a printer plus a separate scanner.

The last 3 printers I have bought have been HP's. I've had a HP 2610 all in one for about 10 years and this past Christmas my wife bought me an HP Envy for the rv and I have good luck with the HP printers.

Just bought a new Epson WF-3540 that is an all-in-one and holds 500 sheets of paper. So far I have been pretty impressed with it and would highly recommend it. The last 2 printers I had (before this one) were HP's and while they did last a while and did print OK, I always had issues (quirks) with them. So far (8 months) so good with the epson.

My wife (also a teacher) has a HP that she likes. They are generally pretty reliable.

I have a Canon Pixma that I like quite a bit although she does more printing than I do so her's is probably more rugged.

I never had much luck with Epson printers.

You want the best then Epsons xp610 or 810 series are awesome. I use to work for epson and then hp but the Epsons are tough to beat. Great scan quality and awesome print quality with their Claria inks . The hp photosmart is nice too. If you want an inkjet get an epson if you want a laser printer then hp would be best.

I got an Epson WF2540 Ink jet for home use. All in one print, . scan and fax. Great quality prints. Might be a little slow for some, for me its fine. Only cost +/- $110. It uses 4 separate ink cartridges unlike the HP I previously. Result, cheaper ink cost.

I'm probably going to get this.

Amazon.com: Hewlett Packard LaserJet PRO 200 Color M251NW Wireless Printer (CF147A#BGJ): Electronics

I have thought of the Epson WF-3620/3640/4630/4640 series but I think the laser will be a good bet with what my wife needs. I've read that the Epsons use a little color ink every week (or so) to keep the jets clean, so when my wife actually needs color she might not have enough.

P.S. Using smile.amazon.com lets me send 0.5% of Amazon's money to the NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund :D

I use a B&W HP laser printer. The toner cartridges are rated for 2500 pages. They usually last over 3000 pages (6 REAMS of paper) for me.

Laser printer are vastly superior to inkjet printers. The cost per page is much lower, and they are WAY faster. If you don't use your inkjet printer for a couple of weeks,or as little as a week in low humidity, odds are, your ink cartridge is *****. This never happens to laser printers.

I've always stuck with HP, sure they are not perfect but I've been burned by the others. Epson was the worst, .gov customers would read the latest fad pc magazine and have to have Epson's because of the great reviews even though we would try to tell them not to. Of course they don't print fancy pictures often enough that the ink would dry up and then they would call us and demand we give them free replacement ink since we sold them the printer. Pretty much the same as Apple, they buy it because the rag says its better then get mad at the middle man because it was a piece of ****.

Well I bought the expression series cause it prints CDs / DVDs not many on the market do that but then again I do not print that much. If you need cost per page then laser jets or the new office jet HP ink printers are best. The new HP officejet printers with XL cartridges will print up to 2000 pages not bad for an inkjet.
