Era wise, I think I am in the right forum. But, that's where I run out of ideas. I have a thing for old cop holsters, especially things that are a little unique. Found this on Ebay and got it cheap. Problem is, I have no idea what it fits. Its way to small for a K frame (see the picture) And, too big for a J frame (tried that, rattles around).

I'm thinking the PP stands for Police Positive (don't know about the "S") . But, I don't have one of those laying around. A Python, Diamondback or a Colt 1917 won't fit... Anybody want to guess?

And, its not the first time I bought a holster for a gun I don't have...yet.

I found an old Speed Safety clamshell a while back at a gun show...I come home and show off my newest toy to the wife:

ME: Hey! Look at this cool old holster I found at the gun show! Look, you press this little button and it pops ope, is that cool or what???

Wife: OK...that's kinda neat....I suppose...do you have a gun to fit it?

ME: Well, actually, no. I don't.

Wife: Even for you, don't you think that's a little weird?

Anyway. What say the assembled experts? (sorry if this is out of place, but, this is my fall back forum for old cop gun knowledge)

Heck Bob, you're the one that created the problem for me with the Safety Speed Holster!

I guess I didn't realize it was actually called a Police Positive Special. I was thinking the PP was Police Positive....Didn't know "Special" was part of the name...

Another old gun I need to find. I was thinking the Diamondback would fit except for the barrel profile. I know the PP has a very slender barrel.

Alk8944, I'll let you know, but, for right now, I kinda like it. Its the first one of that style I have found.

The Police Positive had a shorter frame than the PP Special, and took shorter .38 ammo.

The Audley style holster (made by Jaypee, who made the longtime NYPD holster) looks like those worn by Dr. Roy Chapman Andrews on his famed scientific expeditions. I think his guns were Colt Army Special and/or Official Police models. One is just the renamed version of the other, with, I think, slightly wider sights. The OP came out in 1926, about when he might have bought a new revolver. He led an expedition that year, in 1928 (I think) and in 1930. His earlier Colt .38 was probably the Army Special. (NOT the New Army. But he may have owned one of those in younger days.)

A lot of the members here really need to pay some attention to older Colt models and get some reference books. That Police Positive question occurs here about weekly.

I agree that this holster most likely fits the Colt D frame, 4 inch barrel. The holster is marked Jay-Pee, and if I remember correctly, they bought out the Audley Company, who originally made this style of holster with the little spring metal tab that locked the revolver into the holster. Jaypee makes or made the revolver holster used by NYPD, and it looked similar to the Audley, except the method of retention was a heavy leather piece that was stitched across the top of the holster pocket on the inside. It was designed so the cylinder of the revolver would catch on the leather strip, thereby retaining the revolver.

Jay-Pee is owned by Courtlandt Bootjack, and is located in Flushing, NY.

Ok. So, the difference is that the Police Positive Special, along with a couple other calibers (32-20 and .32 Colt New Police) was specifically designed around the .38 special by having a slightly longer cylinder and frame.

Dug out the 1960 Gun Digest for a picture of the specific gun. Never realized there was a Police Positive and a Police Positive Special....

Thank you.
