Get a Sony Cyber-shot W290, for $229.00. I have an older version. The new one has a system for reducing blurriness by steadying the image in low-light conditions. Very useful for a lot of indoor photography and outdoors at twilight. It also has a better and larger sensor. And, it's got a genuine Carl Zeiss lens, same as my $2,000 Rolleiflex. You can learn more here: DSC-W290 | Cyber-shot® Digital Camera W290 | Sony | Sony Style USA

Here's a couple of sample photos made with my older Cyber-shot. I don't think you can do better for less than $300.

Been happy with our Kodak Z612 for about 4 years now.

Has lots of zoom and image stabilization (look for this). I like the zoom for taking pictures of critters, and such. (12x optical, more in the digital). They make a 15x now, I know.

Second the motion on the Sony Cyber-Shot. I have one about a year old, and it does anything a camera bag full of bodies and lenses did in the past. Easy to use, easy to carry, and the instruction book is actually written in readable english. What else can you want?

I bought two of those W290's maybe a month or so ago.
I got real good deals on those as they were store demo's.
Got one for $87+tax, and the other one for $128+tax.
The first was almost like new, and the second one was mint in
the box with the tag still on the strap.
I'd say I'm fairly happy with them overall. I kind of wish I had a
big DSLR, but lots more dough to cough up and I'm cheap.
The W290 can take some pretty good pictures as long as the light
is fairly good. They can get a bit grainy under low light, but I
imagine a lot of them do that unless you spend more money.
I like the 720p HD video they will do. Looks pretty good for a
P&S camera the size of a deck of cards.
I'm going to build a trail camera with the first one I bought.
I bought the 2nd one to use as a hand held after I modify the
first one.
These are off the W290.. The Corvette ZHZ is one of those Hertz
rent a Vettes my brother was driving this last week end.

Any of the Cannon models with IS, (Image Stabilazation). I bought a S2 IS three years ago. 12X zoom, SLR viewing, uses regular AA Batteries (or rechargeable), Any size SD Cards. 5MP. Mine was about $250. I think the current model is a 20X and 10 MP, but6 not much different in price.
