My husband was cleaning my grandpa's old police revolver which is a S&W 6 shot double action revolver, 38 special. He lost the screw that is located in front of the trigger guard and that holds the spring that keeps the cylinder from spinning freely. We don't know the name of the screw or where to get one. The gun is very important to me so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

It's a crane/sideplate screw and you should be able to get one from Brownell's, Numrich or straight from the S&W factory I would think. Unless it's too old and the factory doesn't support old parts any more. You may need to find a used part.

You'll need to know the model to order the correct part though.

I'm sure that there are other places too though and someone will be along shortly to let you know!

No, it is the cylinder stop screw. There is a small steel rod called a cylinder stop plunger in the hole with a coil spring on one end. Do you have that?

The part number for the screw at Numrich arms is 358730A.

Try this link.

You can search for the part number.

Please have pity on your husband; he was only trying to be helpful. Write back if you need any further help.

No, it isn't. You didn't read the OPs post. She is referring to the cylinder stop screw used on 4 and 5 screw revolvers.

Min73,

This really shouldn't be too hard, but it will take a little "Googling" to find. Try: oldwestgunsmith.com , Popperts Gun Parts, Numrich (EGunparts.com), Jack First, for a start. Did he lose the spring and plunger too?? Make sure before you start your search, might as well find everything at once if possible.

If you have the spring and plunger, and cannot find the screw, one can be made from a "yoke" screw. It is only necessary to shorten an old style yoke screw by removing the short smooth end from the screw leaving just the threaded portion.

I've got everything you need min73. Send me a PM and we'll get it sorted out. I'll need your mailing address.
Holler at me.

Hi LeBur,

Since you seem to have some old parts, thought I'd ask. I need an unaltered strain screw for the main spring on my Model 686-2. It's a square-butt L-Frame

Yes? Yes?

Thanks!
