This Forum being the fountain of all knowledge I am inquiring herein.

My elderly Mom's Zenith tv kicked the bucket last week. It is (was?) a very large console tv vintage 1990. Knew it would not be feasible to attempt a fix even if one was possible, so got a new Sony Bravia.

That said, the console is quite beautiful and well built. I therefore dismantled the innards, removed the BIG picture tube and dragged it into her basement. All components were removed and tossed except for the picture tube.

I do want to get rid of it (the tube) which begs the following questions. Is it dangerous to smash it with a sledge hammer to make it easier to dispose? And might it be hazmat and something that should not go in a dumpster? I have legit access to a business dumpster and would surely wear goggles and stuff if I do pound it into smaller (read much lighter) pieces.

Thank you, in advance, for your collective wisdom.

Be safe.

They are lined with lead. You should be able to take it and all the other innards to a recycling center that accepts electronics for disposal.

1990 Zenith console?

I'm not sure but you might have missed out on a good amp. I have a friend that's always looking for consoles or anything else that might have tubes. He builds guitar amps

Were there other tubes?

I used to work in a TV repair shop back in the 80's when I was going to college. We used to take those bad boys to the gravel pit and "dispose" of them during a shooting session. I learned real quick that it does not take much of an angle for a .22LR to bounce off the screen without breaking it.

Don't be too sure you can't fix it. You just need to meet the right dude.

Thank you.

Thanks to all who replied.

Gator Farmer: That is what I have in mind. Cabinet is perfect and quite nice. No value per your link's site...will be a 'do it myself' project.

Local recycling has special days for teevees...will store 'til next date.

Got it out of back of my Wrangler and storing behind a fence for time being. Sucker was HEAVY.

Be safe.
