I was using sub-sonic .22 for squirrel elimination at the bird feeders, until a neighbor complaint and a warning from local PD.

Now thinking airsoft (hoping not too "soft") as a non-lethal but legal deterrent. I need adjustable sights and accuracy to at least 25 feet.
Pellet guns are out due to local ordinance in residential neighborhoods, ditto for steel BBs. Airsoft and paintball seem to be exempt.

Any suggestions for something on the cheap side?

Have you thought about nailing a rat trap to the tree, (the ones that look like the good ole mouse trap, only rat size) or where ever it can be nailed down to? Then baiting the trap....

Uh Oh...here comes the PETA folks on here and telling us how in-humane that is going to be. It may not kill them with one swift spring of the trap.

But if you're only going to try and eliminate them, it would be quiet....

Go for paintball. Nothing like bright orange squirrels running around.
Of course, you might miss and paint the neighbors house or car.

Squirrels are easy to (Havahart brand) box trap and relocate. I use it with one end open, one end closed, and peanut butter on a cracker in the far end of the trap. The squirrels are completely unharmed, so the neighbors will have nothing to complain about.

Trapping/relocating squirrels is a misdemeanor under NYS conservation law.

I was considering an electric fence charger, but they, too, are illegal unless the land is zoned agricultural, but I'm zoned residential, despite 50 acres of oak woods behind the house...

You won't use pellets or BBs because they're illegal in a residential neighborhood but you were using a .22?

Karl, hate to say this, but I guess you have to get rid of the bird feeders. The old expression was, "They've got you coming and going." Everything you do is wrong.

Yes, I quit feeding birds in the winter 5 years ago because of squirrel and mouse problems, but thought that suet instead of sunflower seed might spare me. I was obviously wrong, at least in terms of the tree rats.

I'll dig out my old squirrel guard plastic dish, although it was only marginally effective in past years. The suet feeder is a 7-foot jump, if they can't climb, but the bigger ones can do 7' leaps.

Still no suggestions on an affordable airsoft pistol?

I am going to try a slingshot and acorns this spring.

Believe it or not, wrist-braced slingshots ("slungshots" in the statute) are illegal in NYS, even with a concealed carry pistol permit...very enlightened legislature.
In the same paragraph as brass knuckles, nunchucks, throwing stars, butterfly knives, etc. We can finally own crossbows, however.

I can buy buy a "wrist rocket" type on the Internet, but cannot legally possess it despite legally owning 30+ handguns...

How about a dart or blow gun then? No guns?.. Then maybe a pet hawk?

I suppose if a person had the room, they could go to extremes, and build a pond about 50 feet in diameter, then put the bird feeder in the middle.

But I suppose NY would then be all over your for proper drainage, A child proof fence all around. Then some other dumb law, like allowing the pond water evaporate into the air without a filter.

I use a rabbit stick myself. You can get fancy with one...but it basically involves throwing a stick. Sticks are presumably legal in New York.Though I suppose there might be a law against harassing wild life, hunting out of season, etc.

Since squirrels do eat meat, say it was coming right for you.

Is a non wrist brace sling shot illegal? I can send you a forked stick and any evil rubber bands you added to it would be at your discretion.

Any air soft gun will annoy them. I would simply go to the nearest Walmart and pick one that met my fancy...assuming airsoft guns are legal in NY.

Rabbit sticks also work, as the name implies, on rabbits. Additionally you can use them on birds, feral cats, musk rats, what not.
