This is an interesting question. Some one has said that he had all that he needs, but so far he does not have all the ones he wants.
I liked that comment.

I need one 357 Magnum made by SandW. I need one semiauto in 45 ACP. I have one 22LR revolver which is all I need for target and plinking.

I need one 22LR rifle. I have one customized Ruger 10/22.

Those meet my needs. I have a lot of others that I enjoy and keep for
the fun of it.

Readers let us hear your thoughts on needs and wants.

Wants vs Needs.
It makes no sense really. If I want it, it is a need to satisfy my want---but I needs it so I don't have to want it---when I got it all I have done is to make room in my wants so I can buy what I need----but then again---who's on first?
Blessings---unless you don't need them.

I have only NEEDED one of my guns, my M696, once. It was a dark night when I caught a prowler outside my acreage. Just the sight of it made him suddenly decide he wanted to be someplace else.
I prefer to have a bunch of guns, whether I need 'em or not. I tell Missus P&R Fan we need a bunch more. Fortunately, she believes me.
I love that Woman.:D

Got the .357, 45, 9mm, couple of 22s, 12 ga. and 300 mag, somehow it seems like a few 1911s need to be added here and there. The mrs. idea is I only have two hands I just need 2 guns. I told her, you only have 2 hands but you have a dozen sauce pans....sure do miss our king size bed!:(

Don't Need more? Hah! He just doesn't have a well developed advanced case of firearmaholism - yet. Wow, just thinking about those words ("I don't need any more guns") almost starts the DTs for me - BRRRR! Actually, I need more safes and a bigger place to put them, as well as more guns. Don't talk to me about Firearms Anonymous, I can quit any time I want. Yeah, right. I only need a few more. Really, then I can quit. Heck, I haven't bought another gun for a long time, well, almost a week, anyway - but I had good intentions, I wasn't going to buy another one, but I stopped in to say hi to the guys at the local pusher's store, and they brought out an engraved 1858 Remington in a glass-top presentation case with all the accessories, absolutely mint (except for the patina of a 140 year old finish), offered me a screaming deal, then dealt a bit more on it! I tried, I really tried, but the old "just one more" demon got to me. Oh well, I'll resist the next one....or at least I'll try....I think I will, anyway. Visions of that nice Model 67-1 they have with the really smooth action aren't really dancing around the back of my head! Really!

I have the need versus want argument all the time. It generally goes like this:

I need a S&W 5946. I want an M1 Abrams tank.

I need a S&W Model 66. I want a M240B machine gun.

I need a S&W CS9. I want a M82A3 sniper rifle.

This way I focus on what I NEED and save a massive amount of money in the process.

I guess I will be a wet blanket here again. I aquired my "collection" in the 1960s to the early 80s. I have some fine classics. I own about 30 nice handguns. Many fine old smiths and colts. About 20 long guns, the majority old winchesters. Roughly I suppose I own 45 guns I dont really need. Now I bought the guns as a single man when I was working. The rules change the older you get. I am now married to a much younger squaw, (almost 17 years different). When I cross the river my retirement totaly stops as I was retired and single when we met. She has health problems and I dont want her to have to go back to work.
Daily it is on my mind that she could never get a fair price on my guns. I am fighting with myself thinking the most responsable thing I should do is sell the ones I dont really need. Then I look at it again and alibi gambling and putting it off for awhile justifing that train of thought with the guns will gain in value while I probley would end up buying a new vehicle or side by side ATV that I dont really need and in a couple years a $20,000 vehicle might be worth $5,000 as to where $20,000 s worth of guns might be worth $30,000s! Thats the math. Its not fun being realistic and thinking that way. Yet the truth is most my guns dont get outside the house. Life is a gamble.

need has nothing to do with it,never has been. if you want it and can afford it, then buy it. don't understand this need idea. when you have at least 3 safes full, then, maybe you can say i don't need it. sorry i got of on a tangent there, now back to this need question.

Unlike most things in life, with many guns you don't know what you need till its yours:)

Who in their right mind needs :

4 Riot guns
3 Model 70's
2 Trap guns
And a 5 inch 357 Smith

A salesman () told me that (regarding handguns) after you have one, the real "need" is gone. I guess I could agree, but it sounds boring...;)

Like many of us, I cant tell you how many got salted away in my safe after only shooting once or twice to be maybe fondeled and wiped down once every year or two. Is that sane and normal? Not when you get close to alzheimers age and you know your wife wouldnt know how to sell them or what to ask! As said before, I am a gambler and gonna try to reconise my time a little farther down the road.
Years back my dad was in his late 80s and tried to tell me he had alzheimers in a indirect way. Aw pa, most people just forget some things when they get close ta 90, dont worry about it etc. Pretty soon he DIDNT worry about it, and I had the most difficult mess to handle in my lifetime!

It does all depend on how you define "need". If you look at the definition from strictly a defense/hunting standpoint, you get one answer. If you also consider firearms and ammunition as valuable real property and as such a hedge against inflation and potential use as barter, you get another answer. I'm in the second camp. Therefore, my "need" is to accumulate all I can afford. The same could be said for good whiskey, though it don't seem to last too long around my place..........
