I'm looking for a good campground, with decent fishing on site. Shopping and dining within a few miles would be great. I've camped in Destin area on the beach, but would like to hear about campgrounds on bays or lakes, in the gulf coast area; anywhere from Panama City to west of Biloxi. If you have stayed at an inland lake, you really liked, let me know. All replies and opinions will be appreciated. thanks Mikey in Indiana

Destin is the destination.

The shopping is the thing that throws it- I've always like Steinahatchee myself, but that's because it doesn't have shopping and stuff.

Thanks to the 2 people that replied. I guess I will depend on the internet camping rewiews, for the gulf area. I did like the article from the wildlife refuge, about the Whooping Cranes.
Thnks for your help. Mikey

Guess I did not read fully read your post. You want Gulf Coast area? How far South do you want to go? Do you want Florida?
As far as beaches, Destin sand is pretty hard to beat. It is gorgeous there.

I'd like to help but, pretty much, all my camping has been done at Red Fish Point, which is on Tyndall AFB, and is not available to the public, or a Blue Springs, which is also not available to the public (Boy Scouts had privileges, I guess).

You looking for camping - set up a tent in the woods - or you looking for a campground - drive your RV onto the lot with your neighbor 5 feet away and the bathhouse down the street?

Thanks for everyones help. I'm taking a pretty hard look at Flint creek in Mississippi, looks like a nice place.
I pull a 25 ft travel trailer, and have camped all over the eastern 2/3 of the U.S. I've stayed in half the Florida, South Carolina state parks. Been to Disney, New Orleans and Destin several times. This year I'm looking for places to relax more, but someplace the wife can shop, and places to dine out. The southern parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida Panhandle are calling me pretty hard.
Destin worked pretty well, lots of shopping and food joints, and fishing close by. I'm just looking for new places, highly praised by the good people on this, outstanding forum. Thanks again to all! Mikey

Dauphin Island, Alabama has a nice camp ground, good fishing.Couple of eateries are on the island. No shopping though, have to go into Mobile(about 25 miles for shopping)

It's very quiet, get's crowded only during Mardi Gras and the Deep Sea Fishing rodeo.

XXXXXXXXXXXX

St. Andrews State Park in PCB is really clean and well policed. Drunks and idiots not allowed. Captain Anderson's, Lady Anderson, Boat Yard, Angelo's Steak House...many many fine restaurants within a few minutes of the park entrance. Club Lavella (biggest club in the US) just about 5 minutes out side the gate as well. Not sure what kind of shopping you are asking about. If it is fishing tackle you're in luck. Even if you are wanting outlet shopping, destin commons and all their out let stores are only 40 minutes away on US 98.

It was 24 and wind of 30 knots yesterday.

Table Rock Lake and Branson, Missouri, fit the bill. Right smack dab in the middle of the Ozarks with some of the most beautiful scenary in the country.

Another good choice would be Lake Ouachita and Hot Springs, Arkansas.

In Louisiana Lake Fausse Point has nice cabins as well as trailer hook ups and it's pretty new. Also Burns Point (a but rustic;)) will put you on Vermillion Bay within spitting distance of the Wax Lake Delta Area. If you want to experience marsh and coastal fishing this would be the place-or maybe Cocodrie-or maybe Cypremort Point-or you could go to the Cajun Rivieria aka Holly Beach. These last 4 are pretty well off the beaten path and are fairly remote so if you come bring a sense of adventure and lots of provisions.

Thanks for all the replies, I will take closer looks at all mentioned here. I stayed at St. Andrews in PCB, but it as been 20 years. I don't5 remember much about it, except it was clean and close to everything, and just a short walk to the beach. Thanks again for all the gulf places suggested and Table rock, in Branson. Branson is one place I've never stayed, but Table Rock Lake looks nice, in photos. Mikey

Three Rivers State Park in Florida is on Lake Seminole, and Seminole State Park is a Georgia park on the same lake. Great fishing and boating.

Dothan, AL is about an hour from either park and has great shopping and a ton of restaurants, and Bainbridge, GA (another larger town) is just up the road from Seminole.

Seminole's one of our favorite parks. We usually camp there several times a year.
