I needed a Model 14 to have made into a PPC gun. When my gunsmith said he knew a guy who wanted to sell one for $350 I told him I would take sight unseen. When it was delivered it was in much better condition than I anticipated, had the original box, paper, extra 4" barrel, extra target trigger, and target hammer. The gun now has a target trigger and hammer. Was this the original configeration or an add on? I attached a picture of the box end.

I need advice. Is this gun too nice to turn into a PPC gun?
To make it into a competitive PPC gun the barrel would be replaced,bo-mar type rib installed, etc. Should I continue looking for another gun?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Nice score.
If the box's serial number matches the gun, the target trigger and hammer are add on's and the ones in the bag are probably the originals.
I don't know the significance of the 4" barrel.

It's not a rare gun but it is a very nice gun and you got it for a good price. Why not use it for your original purpose -- it would make a great competition shooter.

Congrats

Bill,

I think you lucked into a really great find. My opinion is that to the right person, you gun is easily worth twice what you paid. If it were me, I'd put it aside and buy a Model 15, or 64 from J&G as the basis for your PPC gun.

Best of luck,

Dave

I say keep this gun as is. I like the idea of a J&G or sinlar gun as the base for your project.

If you look at the upper right corner of the box, you'll see the boxes near TH and TT are unchecked - if this is the matching box, it came from the factory with the standard hammer and trigger. The 4" barrel has a slight taper from the frame to muzzle end, and is likely from a model 15. A few 4" model 14s were made and had a non-tapered barrel.

I agree with keeping this one as is and looking for a shooter-grade gun to modify.

VM is correct - you have the original hammer and trigger right there in the bag and the label is not marked, so why would this be a question? Good buy.

When I had parts changed out at S&W Service Center, the original parts were always returned in such a bag... & I likewise I kept them with the gun.

If they're still building PPC guns the way they did back in the 1970s when I played that game, the sights and barrel are removed to be replaced by a BoMar rib (or what ever's hot now) and a bull barrel installed. All the good PPC shooters I knew used narrow, polished triggers too so that Target Trigger would have to go.

Why you would need anything beyond a M-10 is beyond me. I sure wouldn't mess with a nice 14 to build a bull gun. Oh, and that 4" barrel looks tapered which would mean it was from a 15. Any chance someone had the factory turn their 15 into a 14?
