Hi everyone, I'm totally new here and have a question for all you experts. I'm looking at buying not only my first revolver, but first handgun. I've decided a S&W .357 mag but there are so many types I'm totally lost. I'm currently looking at a 27-7 with the 8 shot 6 1/2 inch barrel. The seller is asking 800 and I have no idea what they're worth but from what I've seen it seems to be a good price. Its number 77 out of 100. Thanks in advance :)

Welcome and you can't go wrong with a member of the Model 27 family. I am not familar with the dash 7 variety (mine is a 27-2). Others can speak to pricing far better than me, but I agree 100% with you--that sound reasonable. I assume the gun is new, if used, you would be wise to review some of the threads here on doing a basic check on a used revolver.

That's a mighty big gun so it begs the Q; what are you going to use the gun for? If it's hunting, target shooting or protection from wildlife while in the woods, excellent pic. If it's for concealment that another story. I'm not sure about the price point, but it is a good start for a first gun.

Thanks for the replies and warm welcomes! To answer the inquiry about the usage of the handgun, I am 19 so concealed carry is out of the question. I've always dreamt of having a revolver since I was a little kid so I want this to be my first handgun. I hunt pigs down here in florida so I'd use it for that along with target practice and as a night stand gun since Tallahassee isn't the nicest of areas.

You have chosen the perfect revolver. You need to search the forum and read the threads about the Registered Magnum, the first/finest .357 ever made back in the 1930's I believe. Your Model 27 is the direct descendant of the Registered Magnum.

Welcome to the forum from CT, agaas4.
As other posters have said, your choice for your first wheelgun is super.
Good luck piggy hunting, down there in FLA.

Thanks everyone! I greatly appreciate it. I think I'm going to end up getting the 27-7 as long as the price is fair. I pig hunt with by bow all the time and have taken them down up to 300 pounds with 4 inch cutters. I feel like a revolver would be a lot of fun though!!

Welcome agaas4.
Good choice on a 6" .357 as your first gun. It will not let you down.

I think the 27/627 or slightly smaller framed 586/686 are good options. Personally I would recommend a stainless revolver as your first for ease of cleaning and maintenance but blued does have its appeal. 6.5" is a long barrel, works fine for your uses, although going down to 4" is something I'd recommend considering too. Enjoy!

I second what BAMac says but I do not recomend the 627. A 4 inch 686 will do all that the 627 will do for less money and allow you to put it on your hip when the need arises.

Welcome from a fellow Tallahassee native! You might take a look at a Model 66 Combat Magnum. 6 shot and a little smaller if you want to use it later for a CCW.

Get a 22 and learn to shoot. Do not make your first revolver a powerful, expensive to shoot revolver. Ammo cost is too high to shoot the thousands of rounds you need to shoot in order to learn.

My friend has a .22 that I'm very familiar with and have been able to take out a fair share of the armadillo nuisance we have down here so I'm not too worried about that! I wouldn't be shooting .357 mag rounds either too often, most likely just .38 special to save my wrists

Find someone who truly knows how to shoot handguns for some instruction and start with light 38 Specials in your .357. It will take a keen grasp of the fundamentals to be a successful handgun hunter. I think your choice of guns is fine as long as you learn the basics of marksmanship, and that's hard to do with high-powered ammo. Welcome to the forum, and let us know when the pigs start falling.

Welcome to the Forum- The 27 is a great gun, but for your intended use, and as your first revolver, I would suggest a 686. It is capable of handling any load the 27 is, is in stainless (best for use in the field), and will ride a bit easier on your hip, and probably your wallet, too.

Welcome. Glad to have you here.

I own a pre model 27 made before they used model numbers. It has a 6.5" bbl. It is fun to shoot. And it is a 6 shot.

I also have a 4" 686 (stainless) which is a 357. I really like it. It has been my companion for the past month or so since I bought it.

Both the 686 and 27 can handle 357 ammo for a long time.

I love the model 19 or it's stainless brother model 66. But they were originally designed for the 38 special. It is recommended that one practice with 38's but carry it loaded with 357's. It is the only one that can 1/2 way be used for concealed carry.

For shooting and hunting I so like the 27 on the bigger N frame or the 686 on the medium L frame I recently sold my Nickle 4" 19 to finance the 686.

If I had extra money I would have a 19/66 or 2 but retirement wages are slim.

I always felt I could live with the pre 27 forever but the more I shoot and use the 686 I now feel it is the keeper.

One side note, the 686 is the same size as a Colt Python which some felt was a great size for the 357. I've owned 4 Pythons, I think the 686 is as good as a Python. Definately way more gun for the money when comparing prices. I'd rather have 3 different model 686's than one Python.

The bigger frame S&W's will help with recoil on the 357, there are several companies that make great loads fopr the 357. I have not used them, check them out for pig busting.

As a kid and into my 30's I shot thousands of rounds through Dad's Ruger Single Six .22. When I bought my first handgun in 1993 it was a 686-3 6" and it is cherished. She popped of 150 rounds last Sunday. Dad wants it so bad since the 1st time he shot it 22 years ago and she's not for sale!!

Welcome to the FORUM, from Ohio. I have a 28 no dash 6" (a plain jane version of the 27) Great gun. You may be able to find 1 cheaper than a 27, and they do the same thing. BUT... I would also a 586, or 686. I have them both. They shoot 38's well, and take magnum punishment. Let us know how you make out. Bob
