Hello fellas wandering if you could give me some help? I am considering purchasing and 29-2 nickle 8 3/8 inch barrel excellent condition and wandering if somebody could give me approx date of manufacture ?The serial number is N4301XX.I have not personally seen the gun , i have only seen a photo which is of average quality , the gun appears to have a matte finish so i first assumed the gun was a 629 but the dealer assurred me it is definatley a 29-2 so i am assuming it is a nickle finish. Is there anyway of telling whether it is a genuine nickle finish going off the serial numbers or maybe it has a chrome finish appllied at some stage.
Thanks in advance.

A factory nickel will have an "N' on the front left side of the frame under the stocks.

the sn# dates it to 78 which is slightly before the 629

N430xxx would be 1978, way too soon for a 629 so this gun is either nickel or possibly a hard chrome refinish but definitely not stainless.

Here is a photo of the gun in question, the finish appears to be of a matte or satin finish, maybe its just the way it came out in the photo but will check the N preifx on the grip frame.

The hammer and trigger appear to have been refinished as they should be casehardened and show the colors. I believe something has been done to alter the finish on the 29-2.

Doc ...this is what i think also...the finish doesnt appear to be nickle as far as i can tell, so i ma assumming it is a blued gun refinished in chrome.Unfortunatley i can not see the gun in person as it is in another state.
Thanks for youre help.

Looks like maybe hard chrome with that frosted look it has. If the price is right it would be a great using gun with that finish

Hard chrome "looks" very much like Stainless Steel while the matte Nickel or Electroless Nickel has a very different 'yellowish' color to it.
