I'm looking at a somewhat rare, transitional S&W 629 no-
dash with a 4 inch barrel. This gun rates about 98% and
has the original presentation box that has had the interior
redone as the original lining fell apart over the past 30 years.
This gun has the recessed chambers and a non-pinned barrel.
The target trigger is the wide one and looks smooth from the
pictures. The serial # is N874XXX, which I think dates it to
1980 or 1981.

The asking price is $1,000. I don't know if this is in line with
it's rarity, or overpriced. I need some advice from the more
experienced collectors on this forum. Thanks much!

I paid $800.00 for a 4" 629-0 P&R about three years ago. Yours is probably worth a grand now, maybe a little more with the box and even though it probably doesn't make much difference there were probably fewer transitionals made than P&R. I had a 629-4 that I sold for $750 when I got the no dash, which almost made it a wash. Pinned and/or recessed revolvers make me happy.

What do you mean that you haven't bought it yet?? Get out and buy it before one of us does!!

Most of us who seek them and/or own them are increasingly aware of how few of these no-dash guns are becoming available...

The public and collectors are finding it increasingly more difficult to find them.... and then try to acquire them when we do. When fine guns that are this sought after are priced below the current selling price of similar new guns their value has no where to go but up and up and up.

If you asked members here who actually own no-dash 629's how much money it would take to part with them you may get a better picture of what they are worth.

If a 4" no-dash 98% 629 and a NIB 629-6 Classic were placed on a table and either was offered to me for $1200 -- without a heartbeat of hesitation I would take the no-dash. FYI, I do own both and I love my 629-6 as a shooter....JMHO

Well, I appreciate all the input guys. I guess I'll contact the
seller and see if we can strike a deal. He's had a lot of offers,
most of which he didn't like.

Also, on this particular gun, were the grips serial numbered to the
butt frame?

Well, I bought the S&W 629 no dash 4 inch bbl. transitional
revolver with the presentation case. The seller was getting
tired of the ridiculous offers that he said he would sell it to
me today for $950 shipped! So, I jumped on it. Just sent
off the funds. I hope I did O.K.

..you did well.... And no, Target grips were not numbered to the gun.

I had what was an original No- 6" that a friend had cut to 5". My friend was never happy with the way it came out and eventually he contacted S&W who just happened to have a Mag-Na-Ported Classic barrel left over from a distributor exclusive. But he didn't like that one either and ended up trading it to me for a -2 Mountain Gun. That was the slickest shooting .44 Magnum I have ever shot. After my friend died I ended up selling the gun to his nephew who was looking for a .44.
