That number should have an "S" in front of it.
It does date to 1956, and would be a .357 Magnum, later called the Model27. Barrel length is 3 1/2" and they are very much sought after by collectors and shooters. The stocks (Grips) are not original, and it has a trigger shoe on it.

It does have an S with the serial number. My concern is that this gun has been refinished in maybe a brushe chrome or nickel I'm guessing. Thank you for that quick reply!

It is definitely not in its original finish. I can't tell if it's in some sort of hard chrome or if it's devoid of finish and we are seeing bare metal. The hammer and trigger are the same color as the rest of the gun and S&W didn't do this. If it started out in nickel there will be an N stamped on the frame under the stocks.

Too bad. Doing this removed about $800 of its value.

I don't know what is going on here as far as finish but I would think that if the revolver was stripped to bare metal it would shurely rust very quickly down here in south Florida especially coming from a condo on the Ocean.

I believe it is hard chromed, and as such you have yourself a great shooter there. Not much of a collectible, but a great shooter. Enjoy it.:)
