Need recommendations for a 1-4x or 1-6x scope for my MOE model M4.

I currently have a 4MOA red dot scope on my 16" MOE model. I feel that the rifle has alot more inherent accuracy than I can realize with this scope, and I'd like to upgrade to one of the current illuminated reticle 1-4x or 1-6x scopes designed for AR15 type rifles. These scopes typically have thin cross hairs with a small illuminated center dot and markings in either MOA or Mil Dot gradations. I want a quality scope but I don't want to just go ahead and spend mega dollars. So I'd like to get some comments from members who have acrually used a scope of this type.

Normally I knock the Made in China optics, but for the price and quality I can't find much fault with my Hi-Lux CMR 1-4x scope. They run about $325. I am going down that road again soon and trying a Primary Arms 1-4x on a hunting rifle, no review on that one yet but lots of guys like 'em.

I found exceptional value in Vortex prism 3x optics. Illuminared reticle and easy mounting system. Maybe $300 these days.

You'll get a number of suggestions as to what to buy. So, a good place to start narrowing down the field is Optics Planet. With the filters they have, you can narrow down by price, features, brand. That way, besides what people here have to say you can see a wider range of what is available.

You can buy a Leupold Hog Plex 1-4x for just over $200 delivered. Great price on a great scope from a great company with a great guarantee.

You just have to accept that you can see "PIG PLEX" whenever you look ar the reticle. It doesn't bother me.

Check out the Vortex StrikeEagle. 1X6 variable. I have it and it works like a red dot on 1 power, and a scope on other powers. Plus it has an illuminated reticle that is still there if the batteries die, even if it is not illuminated, so it will function like open sights then.

I am trying out a Truglo on my coyote killer AR. I haven't had it long enough to start recommending it to a lot of people, but so far it is serving well, especially for the price. If I become dissatisfied with it, a Strike Eagle will be going on next, so if I was going to recommend a scope that fits your description, right now the Strike Eagle would be it.

I have heard some complaints about fish eye on low power, and a reddish tint to the optics on the Vortex scope. Have you found these to be issues with yours?

Within your criteria, I think one of the better choices in the mid-priced range is the Leupold VX-R Patrol. 1.25-4x.

There's a ton of good choices but one thing in particular I would mention is that many of the competitor's offerings in this class can be significantly heavier by comparison. The Vortex mentioned earlier is 50% heavier than the Leupold and so are many others. Keep in mind one-piece AR mounts can pile on another half pound or more. So if you're used to a light weight handling rifle with a 1x red dot be prepared to be holding a much different rifle in your hands depending on the optic and mounting hardware choices.

For those with an overriding budget concern, Midway has the Millet DMS 1-4x with illuminated reticle on 51% price clearance today for $111. Free shipping too. It was a budget optic standard in this class for years at over $200. It's also heavy at 18oz.

Can you suggest a good mount for it? I currently have front and rear iron sights mounted on the rifle. I may have to remove my rear iron sight. My front sight is integral with the gas ring.
I currently have a lower 1/3rd co witness setup.

I just happened to run across it during my usual firearms easter egg hunts.

It's the DMS-1. There's a DMS-2. I don't know if it's been discontinued or what... there's no telling with budget optics. But they show 20 left. Probably not much different than the Primary Arms 1-4x that sells for $119. Heck, I think most all budget optics come out of the same Chinese labor camp.

I prefer one-piece AR specific mounts. They allow the optic to be pushed a bit further forward on the upper receiver to better accommodate eye relief. The VX-R is rated at 3.7-4in eye relieve so just a standard cantilever is all that is needed. The reason I mention this is that some manufactures make a extended cantilever which you won't need.

If you want a Quick Disconnect mount I'd look at LaRue. Otherwise, there's a ton to choose from including the Leupold Mark 2 Integral Mounting System (IMS). Most will raise the centerline of the optic 1.4in - 1.5in. If weight in an overriding concern, Aero Precision makes an 'Ultralight' at 3.2oz.

The front sight will be degrees of visible ghosting 1-3x. 4x should not be visible.

I have this one (Vortex Spitfire 3X Prism Scope) and even though it's only a 3 power, I can consistently bench sub 2 inch, 5 shot, 100 yard groups with it. I've even done a few 1 inch groups. Great scope.
If you use 55 grain fmj, the yardage graduations are spot on.

You know what? I was at the range today, shooting my AR and talking to a gentleman with a higher power Leupold on his AR.
I am at this point getting enthused about a more powerful scope, such as the Leupold 115370 Mark AR MOD 1 Rifle scope. It is a 3x9 power scope with the firedot and mil dot gradations. Weight is 12.4 ounces, still a lightweight.

I picked up a Millet dms-2 when they were on sale.
No complaints so far
