I bought a beautiful model 48-4 the other day. Shot it 18 times behind the house and I thought it had the best DA trigger pull of any S&W I own. I went back out today and when I pulled the trigger, nothing. Second time through, they all shot, same thing a second and third cylinder full.
Now there is a noticeable bind in a couple of positions on the cylinder when the gun is cocked. I cleaned and oiled it because I know 22 mag is notorious for getting a gun sticky and the same thing. This gun looks like it is brand new. There is no noticeable damage to the star on the cylinder or any other part. Can someone give me some advice, please. I really like this revolver.

.22 Magnum cartridges use a slow burning ball powder, and in this caliber, unburned powder granules are notorious for getting under the extractor star and binding up the cylinder. Try throughly cleaning and brushing under the extractor star and cylinder, the fron face of the cylinder using a bristle brush and solvent.

Thanks, John,
After a second cleaning, the binding seems to have gone away, but it is still taking 2 strikes on every round and some more, for the gun to fire. I see no damage to the firing pin and there are no pings from dry firing on the cylinder. Gonna go try another brand of ammo and see if that's what it could be, although I don't think a revolver should be picky about ammo.

Just tried it again with a third different type of ammo, still not striking hard enough to fire on first go around. The binding is gone however.

Failure to fire in S&W K frame revolvers is most commonly caused by the mainspring tension screw backing out. Be sure to check that it is tight and bottomed out.

I got 2 good turns on it before it snugged, so it had backed out. Too dark to shoot now, will let you know tomorrow, thanks.
