I'm getting a S&W 64-5 and I need the best quality speed loaders on the market. Are they made by Safariland? Need recommendations, please. EDIT: what about speedloader cases????

And I'd like to get some really aggressive grips for this revolver, something like VZ grips made for the Govt 45 1911. Need recommendations, please.

Best and thanks,

TK

So much of it depends on how you are going to be using your revolver. If you are going to be an active competitor in USPSA/IDPA/ICORE then many on here will suggest the Safariland Comp III as the ultimate.

I am a competitor and am very comfortable with HKS speedloaders and the standard speedloader pouches that are readily available.

For casual shooting they are also a great choice. Usually you can easily find HKS products at most sporting goods stores or in pawn shops, gun stores etc. The same for holsters.
There is a huge selection of grips made for a K frame Smith.....many of use use Hogue's, but you should decide on what material you want or need and then start to look around. Grips can be very inexpensive to equal to the cost of the gun in pricing.
Hoped that this helped you in some manner......

The speedloaders I seek would be for personal protection and not competition.

I have used the HKS for years. On duty and off.

At $10 each...you won't get hurt for the investment and to try them out.

The model 10-A is what you need.

The key is practice, practice and more practice.

My issue with HKS is you must hold the cylinder in place.
If you don't, when you turn the knob to release the bullets,
the cylinder turns along with it and the bullets do not release.
That's why I prefer Safariland. All you do is push and the bullets
drop into the cylinder.
These are the ones I use for my J frames.

I got a speedloader called the S.L. Variant for $30 and they're sold at Bobby Mac's

What I really like about the unit is that the bullet spread or flare is adjustable. Just visit their website to see what I mean. Tuning one's speedloader is paramount to long life and very quick reloading of the weapon!!!!!

I have and use both HKS and Safariland speedloaders. I prefer the Safariland over the HKS. Safariland has three different styles of speedloaders: Comp I, Comp II and Comp III. The Comp I are supposed to be for concealment and have the small button as pictured by Coach 22 above, for the J-frame type revolvers. The Comp II have a larger knob and are for K, and I think L and N frame revolvers (the Comp II are my favorite). The Comp III are for competition, but I have known of people who carry them for self defense. I carry mine in a standard speedloader pouch, or in a jacket pocket if I'm wearing outerwear.

Best of luck,

Dave

I looked at the S.L. Variants but I use 10 speedloaders in a match, so I decided it would be cheaper to just hire someone to stand with me and reload my gun:D Just kidding...how do they work, do you push to release or twist the knob? I did not see that info on their website.

the shooter simply pushes straight in and each of the six spring loaded receptacles pushes 'em in straight on. It's a great speedloader.

tj, take a look at ebay, for k frame grips. You will see pics, and get ideas on prices. I have bought 3 or 4 sets from there. All have been used, but in good shape. Always some here for sale too! Bob

For basic self protection use, the HKS reloaders are hard to beat. They are tough as a boot. HKS can be bumped around a lot without much risk of accidental cartridge release. The various Safarilands (I, II & III), the Jet Loader and the Variant loader are 1.5 to 3X more. They will load quicker than a HKS, especially with practice.

K frame grips are a shooter's paradise. You can spend around $20 or a tad more for the rubber Hogue or assorted Pachmayr's. For everyday use, one of them will likely be a "best fit" for you. If you like wood or synthetic, then the choice range is very broad. The application and your hand size, followed by your pocketbook are the only limiters to the choices.
