S&W .38 4th change 5 screw
S/N 380321

I'm thinking early 1920's
the grips do not have a anything on the inside.
light ring around the cylinder, bore is very bright with sharp rifling. looks to have been fired very little.

Ditto on 1921. Everything appears to be correct about it. I have yet to personally see a 1920s grip with the SN penciled on the inside of the right panel, no matter how hard I look. But they do exist, according to some here.

thanks all. I didn't realize that the S/N's were in pencil. that would explain why I can't see it, can't expect a pencil mark to last 90+ years.

my S&W collection now sits at 9. all but my 460 is 40+ years old. I guess I should look into joining the Collectors Association

Great looking M&P! I am sure the SWCA will be happy that you will join. You just need the paperwork and a sponsor.

I am going to attempt to post a picture of my right grip (inside with pencil listing of SN). It is hard to see and has taken several attempts to photograph with the camera. Without knowing the SN, it would be hard to decern. The Serial Number is 5770XX.

UpTheHill, Your revolver is in significantly better condition than mine. I would guestimate mine is closer to 60 - 70%, but I only paid $275.00 for it and consider it as a shooter and not a collectible.

after a very close look under a bright light I can make out the pencil markings in the same location as yours. I'm going to have to look using a magnifier to make it out, and probably have my wife take a picture of it with her good camera, not my cell phone camera.

thanks for the info

Move the angle of the light around. Sometimes it helps to have the light shattering what you're trying to see.

You are probably right; you can't expect it. But it does happen. I have a Model of 1905 Target that I inherited from my grandfather. The letter says it shipped to Honeyman Hardware Company in Portland, Oregon on April 6, 1908. The serial number is still fully visible, written in pencil on the inside of the right grip panel. Kinda cool!

Yes, you should. It is a great organization full of a bunch of fine people. I've dropped my membership in most other groups, but this is one I plan to stay with until the Good Lord calls me home.

Penciled SNs on my Colt M1909's grips from 1910. Pencil can last:

UpTheHill, if you are serious about joining the SWCA you can find more info in the SWCA section in this forum. Click the SWCA public sight. There you can find info and print a form to fill out. If you need a sponsor I would be happy to help a Vet. Send me a p.m. if you need help.
