I just purchased a new 629 and I was a little disappointed looking over the gun with how dirty it came out of the case. This is my first Smith and Wesson.

Check your owner's manual, It will say clean & lube your new gun, some may have little machine shavings, or junk from the factory, bought a new Springfield XDM 45 ACP, was jamming, took it back to the Gun Shop, He say's did you clean it ? I said no Its new, Cleaned It, Problem Solved.. good luck with your new gun..

Thanks for all the replies I had a feeling it would be normal I just had different experiences with my Sig P365 and Beretta M9. The Sig (my first gun) was spotless and was even lubricated very well.

My Sig 365X sees a lot of carry and practice at the range. Wait till you see how that polymer frame looks after some use. A little green scotch brite makes the scuffs and scratches look better but I gave up worrying about the cosmetics of a plastic carry gun, (I do love the flawless function, concealment and capacity of that thing).

I like the stocks they put on that gun. Classy! Wipe it down with some Flitz some rainy day when you're bored. Amazing how it gives that mirror-like finish on the S&Ws. (For some reason I can't get the same result on my Ruger; maybe different stainless or something?)
Enjoy that gun. Of course, the best part, besides shooting, of getting a brand spanking new gun is wiping it down and going over every nook & cranny...like a new car. I've got a 629-6 and with magnums it's a very accurate gun; the trigger is the best of all my revolvers.

I don't like the marks on each side of the rear sight. Are they just dirt or actually scrapes on the metal?

I noticed the exact same thing but didn't mention it. If it's scuffed like that it would be unacceptable to me on a new out of the box gun.
