After reading some good reviews on the new 640 Performance Center Black I decided to order one online. As you can see from the pics I have a fondness for J frames.
Just picked it up yesterday and hope to the range this weekend. Here are my initial impressions.
Appearancewise it’s good looking. The fit and finish is good, cerakote well applied. It comes with a small boot type grip which might be OK for pocket carry but I can’t imagine shooting 357 loads with it. I’ll switch to a larger grip for range work.
I was disappointed in the trigger. I mean it’s OK, smooth and all, but not as good as my other PC J frames which costs $300 less. There is slight and smooth take up and then you hit a “wall” (almost like a 1911). A little more pressure and you complete the stroke. It begs tone “staged”, which is not altogether bad but different.
The shells went easily into the chambers and were easily ejected,so good tolerance there. The cylinder is smoothly released, rotated and has good lockup. Timing appears to be good.
Not sure I would say it’s a good value. I paid $920 with tax and then another $25 for transfer. I’ll reserve final judgement after range visit. Hope I don’t run into any of those light strikes others are reporting on the UC versions.
