New 642 no lock: Gemini Custom Style! (Range report)

Just got back my 642 from Marc Morganti, and I am a happy camper! He did the V-6 642 package, full action job, porting, barrel crown, cylinder throat chamfer, etc. It looks beautiful and I can't wait to get it to the range. Once I do so I will do a quick range report. Marc is a total pro, and one of the best guys I have ever worked with. Always in touch, no balony, honest and straight up.

I HOPE you're going to be happy with that ported barrel. I've MagnNa-Ported several of my Smiths and my Scattergun Technologies 870, but I've gotten away from ported handguns for concealed carry altogether.

Aren't those holes so far back on the barrel going to cause some loss of velocity in an already slow gun?

The flash will be blinding. That is not a good piece for carry. Hold the gun close and you'll singe your whiskers.

A lot of opinions both ways on ported guns for carry.

Either way, Marc does beautiful work. One day I'll have him do a J-Frame or SP101 of my own.

I have the same package on my 642 and I love it.I also had him polish my trigger bright it really adds to the smoothness of the trigger pull. He even polish the side plate screws really adds to the look. It sure improves the performance with plus p ammo. Quick back on target and you can practice without making your plam raw. I keep 158 gr. lswhp +p Winchester ammo in mine. I reload for practice unless I shoot indoors then I have to shoot comercail ammo, Then I shoot the best deal that shoots to point of aim. The muzzle blast and porting flash is noticable but not all that bad at least nothing like a short 357 mag.

Had a chance to hit the range yesterday. Flat love this gun, great shooter! Smooth as silk. Has some "porting flash" but comes back on target fast and muzzle flip is way reduced. Frankly I see no problem with nice bright flash on a carry gun, seems like it would be an advantage!

i had one of my 640-1 .357 MagNa-Ported.....shoots so much easier with full house loads, and at night the extra flash is barely noticed since it disappears so fast.

ive done the coat pocket firing thing....no fire but it blew a big freaking hole in the coat.

Can you give more details of this story? Were you wearing the coat at the time? If not, would it have seriously injured you had you been? Did you actually hit what you were hoping to?

ive posted this story before, maybe not here though so here goes....

i used a regular fake leather type jacket with the fake fleece lining that had pockets sewn on the outside of the coat. was wearing it at target was 3 or 5 yards away, i forget.

fired all five rounds, first one or two and my barrel was poking out of the front of the pocket.

end result was 5 hits all over the place and one ragged hole on the coat pocket with some burned powder residue.

the second was a windbreaker with a thin cotton lining and the pocket sewn inside the coat like they usually are.

first shot blew the pocket up like a balloon. my whole hand was now exposed but i kept firing. 5 hits all over the place and a messed up coat.

no clothing on fire.

I've reported here previously of shooting my ported revolvers at night with no adverse blinding, loss of night vision or the setting of fires. I also doubt that you will see any loss of velocity.

What you have there is an absolutely beautifully and reliable ccw gun that has been personalized to you. Enjoy, I wish it was mine.

I've worked with him on several Ruger revolvers.
