I have been sort-of looking for a 49 or 649 for quite some time now. I happened to spot this one in one of my favorite LGS one day after it hit the used consignment shelf. It was only $500 and is a no-dash. (I would have rather had a 49 but you can't win them all.) I picked it up just one day before I happened to be going out to shoot for qualification yesterday so I inspected it at home, "fired" it with a handful of drilled-out primed cases, put some paint on the front sight and took it with me to shoot for record. It has a suspiciously good double-action trigger (single action cocking is a bit stiff, but that isn't exactly a big issue with me) but everything went BANG. In any event I am very happy with it (I added the grip adapter from my bag full of them). I MAY open up the rear sight channel or thin the front sight a bit but other than that this is a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" purchase. Some days the breaks do go your way.

I always thought they were homely little things, until I got one of my own. Nobody did nickel like Smith and Wesson.

Congrats - yours is a beauty.

I started pocket carrying my 649-2 in 1998 when I retired. Had a 36 backing up my BHP before that for many years. Absolutely love the 649 and never looked back. My favorite J Frame by far.

I carried a M649-ND as a backup to my duty weapon for over 20 years. Not always comfortable but it was always comforting. Had to qualify every year and it was never an issue. Made the mistake of selling that 649 after I retired figuring I would have no further use for it. I regretted selling it almost immediately, like selling an old friend. Finally found another and jumped on it like a duck on a june bug. Ugly little buggers but great design.
