Research and experimentation has resulted in the development of a new helmet for our troops. Initial production is underway, and some are now being issued to Marines bound for combat duty. Supposedly, the new "ECH" (Enhanced Combat Helmet) will stop a .30 caliber round point blank with no deflection. Here are the particulars:

I guess that might quiet the complaints about polymer pistols and mags being inferior. If it will stop a .30 point blank, it's considered pretty tough in my book( and LIGHTER ) than the current light weight model to boot!
Great news
Only question is, can you cook in it?

I see it is equipped with straps. I admit I never served in the military let alone combat, but it is my impression that soldiers do not fasten the strap because a close by explosion can create some awful forces on the helmet. I wonder if they come in different sizes?

Can you cook in the thing? The only thing worse than C rats is COLD C rats.... And MRE's weren't much better.

Not fastening your chinstrap is fine for standing around shooting the breeze, but if you are running that pot will fall right off your head. Or going through brush, crawling, or riding in the back of an open deuce and a half.... ;)

Exactly my point, a little heat, some Tabasco and you can then stomach it

It's better to have the helmet on, they have shock absorbing foam pads inside to help alleviate some of the force, not to mention objects flying through the air. The pads are light years ahead of the old webbing. Although it's still around 3.5lbs (for my large anyway) on your head.

The current ACH helmets come in XS-XL.

30 cal in any rifle round sounds like a hell of a headache, but any head ache you can walk away from without holes is a good one.

I doubt this will cure IED related TBIs, I don't believe any helmet can physically stop you brain from smashing around in your skull with the kind of acceleration experienced.

That was widely believed at one time. I have no proof, but I think that if you are that close to a shell burst, torsion on the neck would be least of your problems.

The current issue helmet comes in at least 3 sizes. So I'd think the new one would too.

Oops! That's what happens when your wife calls you as you're typing. I'll correct that!
