My closest hunting possibilities allow shotguns, muzzleloaders or handguns; and I did get a deer with the muzzleloader. Don't want to use a shotgun, but would like to use a pistol during the shooting season.
I had planned to buy a .22 S&W for economical practice, but thought about it and realized that I could buy a lot of practice rounds in .38 or .44 special and just buy one quality revolver. My thinking that I could 1000 rounds of .38 special for about $350, considerably less than I am thinking about spending on the .22.
My Internet researches and gun shop conversations have pointed me to a S&W 686 in .357 magnum.
Let me add that my only shooting experience with a handgun is three times over forty years with 1911 Colt, and I am an athletic and healthy 200 pound, six-one, sixty-three year old.
Does it seem reasonable to buy just that one handgun for practice and the deer hunting? I've got a couple more months to think likely as I wait for my permit in Canandaigua, New York.
