I bought myself some new skis and went today to get some boots locally. The skis were $225 cheaper online, but boots need to be tried on.

Long story short, I didn't want to know the price of anything I looked at, I just wanted a nice fitting advanced ski boot.

I ended up getting something by Fischer, it's a vacuum fit boot.

They heat the boots and liners in an oven then you put your foot in and they put fitted air bags around your boot and squeeze the boot to fit your foot precisely.

I haven't skied them yet, but the fit seems really good.

I haven't skied in about 10 years. I am not really built for it now and even when I went a few times a year, I wasn't very good. I owned my own equipment though. I had a pair of Hanson (sp) ski boots back in the late 70s that were, at the time, very nice.

Sounds like equipment have evolved quite a bit since then. Of course, everything has!

My skiing days are long gone and past. I do envy you however, as I loved to ski.

I learned my lesson a couple of years back when I decided roller skating would be a good way to get some exercise. Since I roller skated, ice skated, and skied on water and snow from about age 10 until my mid 40's, I thought it should be simple enough.

I bought the parts and built some fine skates for street use.

Serious mistake. The skates were excellent but my sense of balance was long gone. 20 plus years had taken it’s toll on my sense of balance. Also they have made major improvements in the ball bearings used in those skate wheels. LOL

I guess I got off lucky and only broke one thumb. I kept after it for about six months and took many lumps and bruises, but it was just no use. I think that is when I knew I was really old.

There is no fool like an old fool.

I gave up skiing in the 1970's when my leather boots went soft on me and someone laughed at my cable bindings. A couple of years ago, my son took me out with rental gear and OMG, it was so amazing to feel what this new equipment brings to the sport. I could just move an eyelash and the turns happened. The difference was like switching from driving a model T to a Porsche 911 (even that is old nowadays). Have fun.

Last year was the first season Ive missed skiing since 1960.My sister talked me into ice skating when Evegreen lake opened the other day.Havent skated in 40 years, but how hard can it be for an old skier? By the 3rd wreck I'm thinking pretty hard!!

The snow skiing season is upon us here in South Louisiana. Unfortunately-due to Global Warming we have not had any decent powder in years. You got any idea how stupid I look sitting around in my apre ski attire surrounded by grass ans mosquitos???
BTW what angle are those down hill boots???

Ouch, I don't know the angle of the boots. I'll ask when I go back on Monday to pick up the skis and bindings.

The new technology is amazing as klondike said.

'Shaped' skis have made turning a breeze and newbies pick up the sport quickly.

I grabbed a pair of 'All Mountain' skis because I run corduroy to pow. (trying to get into the new lingo the kids use :p Corduroy is a freshly groomed trail where the roller left ridges like a potato chip on the surface, and pow is powder of course. ;) )

And my new skis are supposed to be 'rocker / camber'. Could be marketing, I can't see any appreciable difference in shape.

I went wider throughout, with 127mm tips and 80mm waists. They are quite wide compared to the skis of yesterday.

I watched several skiers at Vail last year running skis so wide they looked like two snow boards. I usually see things there that take years to hit the market. I guess they have to R&D products somewhere!!

A rocker camber gives you a reverse arch under your foot.Supposedly makes initiating turns easier without loosing stability.Let us know if it works .

I can't wait to get out skiing this year. My buddies and I are heading up to Hurley at the end of January. Do you do any skiing here in WI?

Peter
