Boeing lands the first order of the F-15EX

By: Valerie Insinna   July 13
The Air Force has officially placed an order for its first batch of F-15EXs, awarding Boeing a contract on Monday that puts a ceiling value for the entire program close to $23 billion.

Boeing lands the first order of the F-15EX

I'm wondering what is better for the long term, more 50 year old designs or more F-35s or something else.

The F-15 airframe is a proven design. The new weapons carriage system gives it a lot more firepower than a Raptor or Lightning II. Slapping in a new radar using the techniques developed for those two gives a large improvement in capability over the older F-15s at a lot less cost than buying more F/A-22s and F-35s.

I've seen the comments that the EX will not be capable of surviving in defended airspace after 2028 because of the advances made by our enemies in the field of SAMs. That is likely true for all of our non-stealthy assets, but that's what the F/A-22 is for, to knock down the opponents top airforce assets and suppress their SAMs. Suppress in this context is bombing the tar out of them.

Always liked the F-4 Phantom... but I guess it's like an old iron now compared to the F15's...

I tend to agree with Paul Sprey of the Fighter Mafia when it comes the F-4. It had to be big to put all those aerodynamic bandaids on one airframe. Mind you, everybody did it back then. Every seen the huge wing fences on a MiG-19? It was to stop the airflow defecting to the tips.;) Even the MiG-23 had some kind of folding ventral fins to improve the handling after takeoff.

Well, reading through the article and some other info online
F-15EX ~$87 million each
F-35A $124 million each
F-35B $157 million each
F-35C $142 million each

F-15 has a larger payload, better unrefueled range, and the best air-to-air kill ratio of any fighter flying today.

I think the F-15 is faster too. The F-22 is a fantastic fighter, but so expensive they canceled it after only building a handful.

The F-35 was an extremely expensive boondoggle compromised by its one-size-fits-all requirements. I don't think it met any of its original performance requirements.

An F-15 with modern avionics could still be impressive. It is missing stealth capabilities though.

Air Force magazine has an article where they claim that the cost of the F-35 will be down to ~$80 million each.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! As if!!!! :p
