I'm looking for some new grips for my 642. I have Crimson Trace LG-305 now and really like the size and shape, but they seem a little tacky -- too sticky. I've looked at the VZ boot grips. They are 1 3/16 wide and fill your hand, but leave your pinky hanging in the air. The Altamont Combat grips are only 1 inch wide, but have that nice little bump on the bottom to catch your pinky. Does anyone know the width of the Eagle Secret Service grips or the Hogue hardwood grips? I think I'd prefer the longer Hogues.

You will get a lot of opinions. I have tried the following for my 642

-Altamont boot. They look amazing, but I didn’t get a consistent handle drawing
-Altamont Bateleur. I like them and they fill my hand better, hard to pocket carry
-Pachymar boot. Didn’t like them at all and they didn’t fit the gun well.
-Hogue rubber boot. The slot for my middle finger wasn’t big enough
-Hogue rubber combat. Great feel, but harder to conceal.

Right now I’ve kept the original boot grip on and practiced a lot shooting it. I like it the best after all this experimentation!

From my reading forums, everyone has to find what clicks with them.

YMMV

You may like the less expensive CT-105 style, the outside surfaces are hard plastic and not tacky.

I have Badger premium grips on all my guns. They fit my hand perfectly. In addition I can select the blank I want.

I've got a pair of the old Uncle Mikes/Butler Creek grips on my 642. They aren't made anymore, but I found them on Ebay. They fit my hand well and have a nice palm swell.

They are also relieved for speed loaders. The stocks are a Craig Spegel design. Here's a picture. Oops. need a new pic. Those are the stock grips. I apologize.

Here are the Uncle Mikes Spegel’s. I second these. Pricey now on internet but worth it in my opinion. Another version on the 66.

I have Uncle Mike's rubber boot grip on my 640-1, compact, easy to grip, probably cushions recoil better than wood. Sadly, these have been discontinued, but you might find them on internet auction sites or maybe even at a gun shop or gun show.

Grips

For those of us with larger hands or fat fingers any boot grip leaves the pinky hanging unto air! This is what works for me on any J frame gun!

I "third" the Uncle Mikes Spegel’s. After trying several different grips, I have settled on these as the best compromise for me. They sure aren't much to look at but work very well.

Lot's of great ideas, thanks everyone. Of the two I mentioned, VZ and Altamont, I think I'll be keeping the VZ's. I played with them last night. The VZ thickness feels better in the my hand and with the pinky curled up tight underneath I've got a good hold on things. I may take a look at that CT-105.

Go outside the box and try a set of Ergo grips. They look and feel unusual but work well imo. Had a set on my J frame for years. There’s a place for your pinkie too.

I dont know if there exists such a thing as a “perfect grip”.
Price, material, size, comfort, aesthetics. There will always be some compromise. So here are the steps to find the perfect grip from experience.
1) Find a nice shoe box
2) Place a new set of grips in the box.
3) Repeat step 2 monthly
4) buy another j frame

S&W Combat grips for J-frames. Excellent fit feel and control. Good for IWB carry, not front pocket unless it's cargo shorts.
