I'm a newbie here. So go easy on me. I've been shooting sporting clays and working my way up to Master the last 7 or 8 years and now I'm looking for something new and 3 gun competitions have peaked my curiosity. I have shotguns figured out for now and I have a 9mm comp pistol that I can use but I know nothing about rifles. What would you say is the best S & W AR for 3 gun competitions and why?

I would go with whatever 16-18" barreled base model you can afford. Then add only this:
Aimpoint. The ONLY thing I have added to a rifle and not eventually gotten rid of is the Aimpoint red dot sight. Everything else: the rails, the lasers, the lights, the grips, the "tactical" **** is all long gone.
Only ONE thing added to the weapon without making it much heavier and without making me eventually regret adding it to begin with.

That's sort of a "Which is Best, Ford or Chevy" question.
I'm new to the AR platform also, having spent the past six years in CAS. Trap, skeet and SC before that. Most CAS shooters will tell you that before you start investing in guns, go to a match or two and see what everyone is using. Don't be surprised if they offer to let you try out various guns. Don't think I've ever met a fellow shooter that would not show you his guns and give suggestions to a new shooter.
