Just go! Every IDPA or other match I've been to has had new folks in attendance. Just go, and let the person who registers you know that you're new. They'll take care of you.

Under IDPA at
Greater Atlanta Defensive Pistol Association
read the New Shooter's Info and New Shooter's Briefing.

Pack up the necessary gear and show up on the range.
You will get help and advice.

IDPA policy is that you only get to shoot one match before joining, but hardly any range enforces that strictly. More like shoot a season before you come under any pressure to join. Of course you have to be a member to shoot a sanctioned match at the state or regional level. I am taking a newly classified shooter to the Florida State in March.
