Good morning folks:

For those interested, I've written my "take" on Winstead after examining about a thousand pages of his FBI personnel file. I think you'll find him a far cry from actor Stephen Lang in "Public Enemies." Abrupt and yet fearless, you can read it by stopping by our site at:

Enjoy the ride...

Guess he never had designs on becoming Attorney General....

Thanks for your efforts in this research, and your work as well, as special agent.

Winstead Addendum...

For those interested, you can return to the Winstead document link in my opening post. I've now added a copy of an "Efficiency Ratings" form discussed in the Winstead paper written. This will give readers an idea of what they looked like in the 30s and the criteria used in these Bureau ratings.

Thanks and have a wonderful Memorial Day. And many thanks to those who served...

As usual, Larry has done an excellent job of research and writing in order that all of us can "get to know" Agent Winstead.

He sounds like quite a "character." I don't know about everyone else, but seeing his pictures and trying to imagine what he was like is an exercise in futility. Sort of like talking to someone on the phone whom you have never met, imagining what they might look like, and then finding out when you meet the person, that the person looks nothing like what you envisioned.

It is the same for Winstead, and all of the old agents. While the personnel file may not give a complete picture, it is what we have, and I for one feel like I know much more about the kind of man he was after this article.

Good show Larry!

Very well written. Literature. Firearms. Justice in various doses of dissemination. True persons of courage and grit. What a way to spend a Memorial Day. With all respect, sir, thank you, for all you have done.

Larry, you are the go to man for anything/anyone FBI. Nice work as always.

Sounds like he was a man's man and one helluva G-man.

I had no idea such a website even existed. What a treasure trove of information for someone interested in Depression era crime, law enforcement, and punishment. Many thanks for the link to the site!
